  • Gustav(e) Wolff, New York/Missouri/Germany (1863-1935), River Des Peres, oil on canvas
    Jun. 10, 2023

Gustav(e) Wolff, New York/Missouri/Germany (1863-1935), River Des Peres, oil on canvas

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Gustav(e) Wolff New York/Missouri/Germany, (1863-1935) River Des Peres oil on canvas signed lower right, framed. Gustave Wolff was born in Berlin, Germany, but immigrated as a toddler along with his family to St. Louis, Missouri. As a young man he studied art at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and grew to become an impressionistic painter who enjoyed employing a muted palette, who became fascinated with the subtleties of tonalism and who focused on cityscapes around him—first in St. Louis and later in New York City. Here in the middle of winter we see an urban industrial bridge spanning a river with snow on its banks. The river depicted is River Des Peres (originally Rivière des Pères—or the "River of Fathers"), named after a Jesuit mission from the 1700s that was originally located near this bridge at its confluence with the Mississippi River. For hundreds of years this river has snaked through the area that is now known as South St. Louis, but it has been well channelized and highly controlled now for over 100 years. Today some think of it as a storm drain or an open sewer, and HEC-TV created an documentary about it called "A Sewer Runs Through It;" it is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

    Feb. 11, 2017

    Gustave Wolff (American, 1863-1934)

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Gustave Wolff (American, 1863-1935), "Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri at the Turn of the Century", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 16 in. x 23 in., framed. Provenance: John P. Kelp Gallery, Houston, TX; The Zigler Art Museum, Jennings, LA. Note: Gustave Wolff immigrated to St. Louis, Missouri with his family at the age of three, eventually studying at the St. Louis School of Fine Art. His teacher, Paul Cornoyer, was a major influence in evolving Wolff’s style to a more tonal version of Impressionism. After graduation, Wolff traveled to the Netherlands to study at The Hague; resulting in the loose, but confident, brushstrokes typical of Dutch artists. The painting on offer here, "Forest Park,” captures a quiet stroll through a St. Louis park in winter. A critic of his time described Wolff’s work as such: "If the maxim that artists are born, not made, be true, it applies most decidedly to Mr. Wolf [sic], whose training was as unsystematic and interrupted as his career was subjected to influences most unfavorable to his artistic development. But in spite of all difficulties he has forged his way to the front until his work has become of such importance that an exhibit of Western Artists would be incomplete without his admirable landscapes."
