Allison Galleries, Inc., New York Sold: Christie's, New York, November 30, 2006, Lot 68 Note: This work comes from the Southampton, New York home of the collectors Catherine Cahill, now deceased, and William L. Bernhard, who continues to live in their Manhattan Park Avenue home. Lifelong New Yorkers, they spent summers in Southampton and Washington, Connecticut, and winters in Palm Beach, where Ms. Cahill decorated their retreat on Major Alley Way with the noted interior designer, Keith Irvine of Irvine and Fleming. Ms. Cahill was an animal rights activist, and a daughter of John T. Cahill, a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and a named partner in the international law firm, Cahill Gordon & Reindel. Mr. Bernhard is a philanthropist and descendant of the Lehman family of investment banking fame. He has served on many Boards of Directors, including the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art, Film at Lincoln Center, and the Winston Churchill Foundation.

From Askart.com: An American painter, miniaturist and teacher born in New York City, William John Whittemore (1860-1955) had a painting career that would span an impressive sixty-five years. The artist began his career in a tight academic style that featured high realism but by the early nineteen hundreds, the artist embraced the looser and more spontaneous painting style of impressionism. The artist's exhibition history is vast with numerous medals, awards and prizes over his almost seven decades exhibition career.
