Property of a Trust

Born in New York, William John Whittemore studied at the National Academy of Design with William MacDougal Hart from 1882 to 1886, the Art Students League with James Carroll Beckwith in 1885 and the Académie Julian in Paris with Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebvre from 1888 to 1889. He won the silver medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition, a medal at the 1902 Charleston Exposition and the bronze medal at the 1905 Atlanta Exposition. Whittemore regularly exhibited works at the National Academy of Design, where he was elected an Associate member in 1917, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Boston Art Club. The artist was a member of the American Water Color Society, the New York Water Color Club and the American Society of Miniature Painters.
