No apparent losses, fading, soiling or other damage to sheet; pigments appear bright and without any notable issues. Overall good condition.

Small oblong folio, publisher's 1/4 red buckram and decorated paper-covered boards with pochoir design on front cover; glassine dust jacket creased with uneven trim along edge of front flap; original card slipcase, toned with rubbing and short splits at corners. Number 103 of 513 copies, presentation copy, inscribed: "To Edward and Claire Margolies on the eve of their marriage, with best wishes from Steve Wheeler." With Arts Magazine photocopy bearing presentation inscription to "Ed" [Margolies]; 1983. Provenance: ex-collection literary scholar Edward Margolies (1925-2017), author of "The Art of Richard Wright." New York: Press Eight, 1947

        STEVE WHEELER (NY, 1912-1992) Rare limited edition book of Screen prints by Steve Wheeler, containing 13 screenprint facsimiles after paintings by Wheeler, with tissue guards. Published by Press Eight, New York for Ferargil Galleries, New York, 1947, as an exhibition catalog for these paintings. Limited edition, numbered in colophon 216/513 copies. Includes a work of prose by John Storck and an essay on the work of the artist by James Gates, 10" x 13 1/2" hardcover. Lacking original slipcase, one small scuff to front cover, otherwise fine condition. Born Stephen Brosnatch in Slovakia, Wheeler was a pioneering Abstract Expressionist, compatriot of Jackson Pollock and Willem DeKooning who, in the 1940s, was a founding member of the subset "Indian Space Painters," explorers of Indian mythology and imagery through abstraction.
