His meticulously executed ship portraits are unique in terms of technique. First he painted the foreground, then the background, the opposite of oil paintings. Voor een gelijkaardig werk zie Christie's Amsterdam, veiling 2868, 4-5.10.2011, lot 667 Deze achterglasschildering toont een vloot van zes Engelse oorlogsschepen en drie bemande sloepen ter hoogte van het Fort St.Marie (Santa Maria) in Cadiz. Vermoedelijk heeft het onderwerp betrekking op het gebruik van de haven van Cadiz door de Engelsen tijdens het laatste jaar van de Napoleontische oorlogen (1815), toen de Engelsen en de Spanjaarden geallieerd waren tegen Napoleon. For a similar work see Christie's Amsterdam, auction 2868, 4-5.10.2011, lot 667 This eglomosé shows a fleet of six English war vessels ans three manned sloops near Fort St. Mary (Santa Maria) in Cadiz, Spain. It probably refers to the use of the harbour by the English during the last year of the Napoleontic wars (1815) when the English were allied with the Spaniards against Napoleon. Weyts repeatedly painted this subject, with minor variations, after an example by his predecessor François Meseure (1772-?) from 1815. 51 x 69 cm (62 x 80.5 cm)

Getekend en gedateerd 'P.Weyts 1830 à Ostende'. De Java was het tweede Britse fregat dat werd verslagen door de Amerikaanse USS Constitution tijdens de Oorlog van 1812. Het treffen vond niet plaats in 1811, zoals door Weyts genoteerd, maar een jaar later, op 29.12.1812. Op de Java sneuvelden 22 mannen en vielen 102 gewonden, op de Constitution telde men 14 doden en 24 gewonden. De USS Constitution was één van de zes eerste fregatten gebouwd door de Amerikaanse zeemacht. Ze werd door de toenmalige president van de Verenigde Staten, George Washington, vernoemd naar de Amerikaanse Grondwet en ter water gelaten in 1797. In totaal kaapte ze in het drie jaar durende handelsconflict met Groot-Brittannië talrijke Britse koopvaardijschepen en versloeg ze vijf van haar oorlogsschepen. Deze overwinningen maakte een einde aan de mythe van de onoverwinnelijkheid van de Royal Navy, de grootste militaire zeemacht ter wereld. Eglomisé. Signed and dated 'P.Weyts 1830 à Ostende'. The Java was the second British frigate defeated by the USS Constitution during the War of 1812. The battle didn't take place in 1811, as noted by Weyts, but a year later on December 29th 1812. 22 men fell on Java and 102 were wounded, Constitution lost 14 of its men and 24 were injured. The USS Constitution was one of the six original frigates commissioned and constructed by the US Navy. She was named by President George Washington after The Constitution and launched in 1797. During the three-year conflict between the United States and Great Britain Constitution captured numerous merchant ships and five British war vessels. The effect of theses victories on the American morale and patriotism was immeasurable, because it ended the myth of the invinciblity of the Royal Navy, at that time the largest maritime force in the world. On the occasion of her 200th birthday in 1997 she was thoroughly restored. Today she is berthed in her hometown Boston, where she can still be visited by the public. 51 x 68 cm (62.5 x 80 cm)

De slag vond plaats ten zuidoosten van Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) op 19 augustus 1812. Aan Britse zijde lieten 21 van de 263 mannen het leven, aan Amerikaanse zijde 9 van de 476. The action took place approximately 400 miles southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) on August 19th 1812. 21 out of 263 men were killed on Guerriere whereas Constitution lost 9 out of 476 men. The victory over the Guerriere earned her the nickname 'Old Ironsides', because the British canon shots had seem to rebound harmlessly off Constitution's hull, made out of solid oak with a thinkness up until 65 cm. 50.5 x 68 cm (62 x 80.5 cm)

Large American flag with star is off stern and back mast. Middle mast has large red ship pennant and front mast has star on blue field. Black reverse painted border with gold trim with legend "Ontario of Newcastle, Maine. John Holmes. Comd. Leaving Antwerpe 1846". "P. Weyts". Housed in a beaded edge flat mahogany veneer frame.
