Portrait of a Lady, attributed to Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller (1751-1811), 19th century Swedish school

      Est: €8,000 - €10,000

Oil on canvas, measures: 84 x 67 cm, framed measures: 97 x 80 cm. Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller, Swedish painter born in Stockholm in 1749 and died in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, USA in 1811. He worked at the Royal Academy in Paris. Chamber painter to the King of Sweden in 1787, he later settled in Cádiz, in whose museum an interesting group portrait of Admiral Juan de Mendoza, wife, sister-in-law, daughters, niece and that of the French consul Luis Rivaupie is kept. The Prado Museum, for its part, has a couple of portraits by his hand, that of the ambassador of the Netherlands in Spain, Count Jacobo de Rechteren - Almelvo, and that of his wife, doña Inés María Aguirre y Yoldi, acquired by the Junta of the Artistic Treasure in 1932. In 1797 he traveled to America as a portrait painter. His masterpiece Dánae created some controversy by becoming one of the first paintings of the female nude to be exhibited in the United States. Upon her return to Europe, it appears that she once again resided in Cádiz. He finally returned to Philadelphia in 1800 and on January 8, 1801, he married Elizabeth Henderson, granddaughter of the noted American painter Gustavus Hesselius, and two years later he retired to a plantation in Clayton, Delaware, where he lived the last years of his life. .

      Nov. 09, 2022

French school of the last third of the 18th century. Attributed to ADOLF ULRIK WERTMÜLLER (Sweden, 1751-1811). "Portrait of a lady". Oil on canvas. Original frame of Charles X period.

      Est: €5,000 - €5,500

French school of the last third of the 18th century. Attributed to ADOLF ULRIK WERTMÜLLER (Sweden, 1751-1811). "Portrait of a Lady. Oil on canvas. Original frame of Charles X period. Measurements: 86 x 67 cm; 97 x 80 cm (frame). We see in this canvas the portrait of a lady of the French nobility. She wears a rich dress of grey ruffles, whose screwed shades the painter recreates with agile and impastoed brushstrokes. The wide pamela, a garment typical of the noble ladies of the period, is worn over the powdered wig. The woman holds a letter in her left hand which reads, among other words, "à Gournay". As in the rest of Europe, portraiture became the leading genre of painting in the 19th century, as a consequence of the new social structures that were established in the Western world during that century, embodying the ultimate expression of the transformation in the taste and mentality of the new clientele that emerged among the nobility and the wealthy gentry, who were to take the reins of history in this period. While official circles gave precedence to other artistic genres, such as history painting, and the incipient collectors encouraged the profusion of genre paintings, portraiture was in great demand for paintings intended for the more private sphere, as a reflection of the value of the individual in the new society. This genre embodied the permanent presence of the image of its protagonists, to be enjoyed in the privacy of a studio, in the everyday warmth of a family cabinet or presiding over the main rooms of the house. Born and trained in Sweden, Adolf Ulrik moved to France, where he became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1784, after which he was able to exhibit in the Official Salon. He enjoyed great fame during his lifetime and even painted Marie Antoinette. An insatiable traveller, he visited Spain (1790) and the United States (1794), where he worked as a portraitist and produced one of the first publicly exhibited nudes.
