A group of 2 Civil War-period sketches of the Military Ball of the Third Corps, Army of the Potomac, February 1864. 2 sketches, both pencil on brown paper, 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 in., each titled and initialed in pencil "ARW." Titles include "The Supper Room" and "The Ganders." Both original, Civil War-period sketches by Waud that were published with other sketches of the same event in Harper's Weekly, 20 February 1864. (Sketches somewhat rough, with some wear, including uneven border along right edge of "The Supper Room," and loss in lower left corner of "The Ganders.") The rough sketches are accompanied by the original page from the Harper's Weekly featuring the published sketches. Provenance: David L. Hack Civil War Art Collection (sold Cowan's, 17 November 2017, lot 115). Noted battlefield artist Alfred R. Waud (1828-1891) was born and raised in London. He studied at the Government School of Design at Somerset House before immigrating to the United States in 1850. Upon his arrival, Waud worked primarily as a freelance artist until May of 1861 when he was retained as a sketch artist and special correspondent by the New York Illustrated Newspaper to report on the war. At the close of 1861, Waud joined Harper's Weekly, where he was employed through the end of the war. He continued to work for Harper's Weekly in addition to a number of other publishers following the war and his career flourished. While touring battlefields in the South in 1891, Waud died in Marietta, GA. The Library of Congress houses most of his original wartime sketches, with some remaining in private hands. While the photographic process evolved rapidly from its inception in 1839 and the wet plate process of taking photographs was coming into widespread use by the start of the Civil War, it was a cumbersome process in the field as well as in the studio. More significantly, at that time, the photographs themselves could not be reproduced as illustrations accompanying written reports of the war. As a result, publishers of newspapers and other periodicals in major cities, primarily in the North, employed a number of sketch artists who traveled with armies to draw the scenes that they witnessed. These sketches, most frequently pencil on paper with brief identifications of people and places, were then sent back by courier to the periodical publishers. The battlefield sketches received by the publishers were then copied by engraving artists onto wooden blocks, which were used in printing presses to illustrate printed articles covering the war. Unlike the photographers of the day, who were limited to capturing the aftermath of battles, the sketch artists had the advantage of recording what they were witnessing as the events occurred before their eyes. In the 1880s, the popular Century Magazine started publishing the narratives of Civil War veterans and retained a large number of sketch artists to illustrate the articles. They used interviews, photographs, and prior war-date sketches to produce accurate pictorial representations of the war. These illustrated accounts were incorporated into a large four-volume work entitled Battles and Leaders of the Civil War in 1881. Almost a century later, in 1973, American Heritage Magazine acquired the collection of drawings that had been held by Century Magazine, which were subsequently reproduced in The American Heritage Century Collection of Civil War Art published in 1974. Christie's conducted two public auctions in 1988, which were comprised of the remaining original Century Magazine Collection of Civil War artwork that was dispersed by American Heritage Magazine, and a number of drawings by noted battlefield artists were previously acquired, including the examples offered today.

ALFRED RUDOLF WAUD (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1828-1891) PORTRAIT OF GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE, oil on canvas, an oval Civil War-era bust-length depiction of Lee in his uniform facing slightly to the left, signed and inscribed to verso "R E Lee / A. R. Waud / 1863". Housed in a period gilt and gesso oval frame. Dated 1863. 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" canvas, 11 3/4" x 9 3/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Alfred Rudolph Waud (1828-1891) was a British-born artist who studied at the School of Design at Somerset House in London as a young man. In 1858, Waud journeyed to the United States with his brother, William, and quickly found employ as an illustrator in the mid-19th century boom market for print media. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Waud joined forces with Harper's Weekly and other like publications as an artist-correspondent producing thousands of battlefield, portrait, and genre sketches over the course of the war. Waud, who was eventually named the most important artist-correspondent of the Civil War by Harper's, was embedded with Union forces from Bull Run to Appomattox and was a first-hand witness to some of the bloodiest battles in American History. Described in some sources as "armed to the teeth" during his time as a war correspondent, Waud was depicted in an 1861 photograph by Matthew Brady with a sketchbook in hand and a revolver and fighting knife tucked into his belt. What's more, Waud often traveled from skirmish to skirmish with Brady and his photographers in their curious wagon, where the two naturally developed a friendship as well as a working relationship in which Waud often relied on Brady Studio images to produce sketches for national publication. In fact, it is likely a Brady image of Robert E. Lee that Waud used as one of his models for the present composition. Indeed, at the time of Waud's death, his estate contained over 1,200 Civil War-period photographic images by Matthew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and others. The present portrait likely comes from the collection of Fred Maloof, a wealthy 20th-century collector of historical art and artifacts, who owned Oxon Hill Manor, a historic property in Prince George County, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. An October 28, 1959 article in the Evening Star, a Washington, DC publication, describes an exhibit of objects from the Maloof Collection, among which is a "portrait of Gen. Lee ... signed and dated 1863 by Alfred R. Waud". The article goes on to state that Waud "was a close personal friend of the general", and while no direct connection between the two has been established, the artist is known to have been intimately involved in the close observation of all aspects of the war, with unprecedented access to both enlisted men and officers from both sides. The appearance of the present portrait on the open market represents a rare opportunity to acquire an unrecorded likeness of an extremely important 19th-century figure by one of the period's most significant artists.

Waud (1828-1891) was an English artist who immigrated to New York in 1850 seeking work as a scenery painter for theater productions. After the Civil War broke out, Waud was hired by the New York Daily News and Harper's Weekly as a Union illustrator to create combat drawings that brought the realities of the war to readers at home. Waud travelled with the Army of the Potomac and witnessed each of the field army's battles, including most notably, the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861, as well as the Battle of Gettysburg and Pickett's Charge in 1863, which few other illustrators witnessed. Veterans of the war lauded Waud for his accuracy and realistic illustrations of combat. Unlike most illustrators, Waud became well-known to the readership as an adventurous, physically imposing and rugged loner. After the Civil War ended, Harper's Weekly called for artists to show their readership 'the rising of a new world from chaos.' Waud depicted the Reconstruction of the South and gave the public an understanding of the nuanced political and social conflicts, including the experiences of African Americans who had just won their freedom. From the South, Waud went on expeditions to the American West. The current drawing is among his post-war oeuvre. Waud sent typical scenes, like cattle drives, rendered in illustrator's detail, back to Harper's Weekly, but also captured the diversity and gumption of the territory's inhabitants as well as studies of the magnificent landscape phenomena that abounded in the American West.

Archive of Alfred Waud Sketches and Notes, 50 plus items

Large archive of drawings and notes by the noted Civil War illustration artist Alfred Waud (1828-1891). Includes several sketches of people in period dress ranging from the 1600s-late 1800s, architectural drawings, Native American people and objects, Mexican places and artifacts, etc. There are 4 pen and ink drawings but the majority are rendered in pencil. Many seem to relate to a trip West (in 1886, Waud toured the Mississippi River Valley and the Dakota Territory). Some are captioned, including a floorplan titled Palace at Palenque, Iron Works at Pilot Knob (Ironton, Missouri), Canal Boats, etc. A couple are signed ARW, but most are unsigned. There are several notes referring to colonial missionary to the Indians, David Brainerd, suggesting Waud may have been planning to illustrate a book about him. Another scrap of paper refers to Harper's Weekly (Waud's employer) and is dated 1866. More than 50 illustrations total, ranging from 2" x 2" to 10" x 11". Circa 1866-1882. Provenance: The estate of Dr. Benjamin H. Caldwell, Nashville, Tennessee. Biography (Courtesy of John M. Cunningham): Alfred Waud was a British-born American artist and illustrator whose detailed sketches of scenes from the Civil War, which he covered as a press correspondent New York Illustrated News, captured the wars dramatic intensity and furnished him with a reputation as one of the preeminent artist-journalists of his era. At the onset of the Civil War, he was dispatched to cover the Army of the Potomac, the main Union military contingent. As a "special artist" for the newspaper, Waud produced a series of quickly rendered sketches in the field-including depictions of the First Battle of Bull Run-which were then printed as engravings. He remained with the army after joining the staff of Harpers Weekly magazine at the end of 1861 and went on to sketch scenes of the Battle of Gettysburg, among other significant military actions. After the war Waud continued to contribute sketches to Harpers, documenting American life in locales ranging from the Reconstruction-era South to the western frontier. As a freelance illustrator, he contributed work to a number of publications, including the illustrated Picturesque America (1872-74).
