        Woman artist.- Marchioness of Waterford (Louisa Anne Beresford, 1818-1891) Lady seated reading in an interior, pencil and watercolour on wove paper, sheet 125 x 170 mm (4 7/8 x 6 3/4 in), minor toning to edges, mounted on paper support, unframed, [circa 1885-1890] Provenance: Sonia Rosemary Cubitt (née Keppel), maternal grandmother of Queen Camilla, (1900-1986) Gifted to Rosalie Glynn Grylls, Lady Mander (1905-1988) Then by descent to Anthea Loveday Veronica Mander (1945-2004) Gifted to John Kenworthy-Browne ⁂ The present drawing appears to compare stylistically with the intimate album of drawings held in the National Portrait Gallery [see NPG D23146]. While recognised for her artistic talent in her own right, Louisa was also tutored by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and attended classes held by John Ruskin. Louisa was said to have modelled for Sir John Everett Millais, and that her beauty served as an inspiration for the the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

        Antique watercolor " The Carol Singer" by Louisa Ann Marchioness ( 1818-1891), image size 5,75" x 3,25"Born and reared in Paris, Louisa Ann Stuart studied art under the great John Ruskin and was a friend of Watts and Burne-Jones. She moved to Ireland in 1842 upon her marriage to the third Marquess of Waterford. She mainly depicted religious and genre scenes, the latter often featuring children and with titles such as "The Little Bridesmaids" or "A Birthday Queen". She exhibited her watercolors at both the Grosvenor and Dudley Galleries in London and some can now be seen in the collections of the British Museum, the V&A and the National Gallery of Scotland. However, the majority of her work remains within the Waterford family. Provenance - Single collection of recently deceased James S Horigan who lived in England and owned gallery and later moved to Colorado.

For a similar work by the artist see the British Museum's 'Girl in profile' (acc. no. 1918,0309.10), which utilises the same rapid graphite underdrawing.

She had a keen interest in art and philanthropy from a young age and was a gifted watercolourist, exhibiting her work from the 1870s onwards. She rebuilt the village of Ford in Northumberland, providing a school for the community which she decorated with life size painted scenes from the New Testament.
