Colnaghi,; Ackermann, 1839.- [35] litografias em [31] folhas; 54 cm.- E., George Vivian (1798-1873), English architect, draftsman, painter and art critic, traveled throughout Europe for 30 years, staying especially in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Scandinavia and Russia. The edition, entirely lithographed and considered one of the most beautiful books ever published on the Iberian countries, was originally published in fascicles, so the number of plates may vary from copy to copy. The present is complete, matching exactly the respective index, also lithographed, that is, it consists of 35 lithographs gauffered on 31 sheets, three of which are preliminary sheets (title page and list of drawings), 27 sheets with 30 lithographs (the plates 19/20, 29/30 and 33/34 are double) and a final plate (tail piece). It should be noted that, of the 35 lithographs, 27 represent locations in Portugal. At the end, two sheets (3 p.) with the publisher's publicity, which do not belong to the edition. Clean copy, preserving all plates very fresh (no separators), covered in good recent binding, entirely in green morocco (probably from the workshops of the Ricardo EspÃrito Santo Silva Foundation), with gold ornamental borders on the covers, smooth spine profusely gold decorated, double â€œfilet de coupeâ€, rolls on the squares and gilt edges; protective case. Blick auf die ruhige Wasserstraße, auf der lediglich eine besetzte Gondel zu sehen ist, flankiert seitlich von den prachtvollen Gebäuden und Kirchen der Stadt, die sich im Wasser wiederspiegeln. In der Mitte des Kanals ist keinerlei Wellenbewegung zu erkennen; lediglich der wolkenlose, hohe blaue Himmel schimmert hier in rötlichen bis ins dunklere Blau übergehenden Farbtönen. Rahmenschäden. Tinted lithographic title, plate list, preface leaf with vignette, and 27 tinted lithographs after Vivian by L. Haghe, T. Boys and P. Gauci, heightened with white. (Title, plate list and a few plates heavily spotted, lighter and more variable spotting elsewhere.) Contemporary green roan-backed embossed cloth, spine gilt lettered. Originally published in 8 parts, this selection of views 'taken in Biscay, Galicia, the Castilles, La Mancha, Catalonia, Valencia and Andalusia' was the fruit of visits made in 1833 and 1837. As explained in the preface, the earlier year was one of tranquility, but during the latter some of the finest convents were being demolished and much of Spain's architectural heritage seemed to be at risk. This gave the artist 'a strong desire to preserve some trace of establishments, where the towers and belfries and long level lines of the buildings, the terraces and the cypresses of the gardens give an interest and character to many scenes not less in Spain than in Italy'.
