Item Overview

Description

VIVIAN, George (1798-1873). Scenery of Portugal and Spain. London: P. and D. Colnaghi, Ackermann; Paris: Ritter and Goupil; Berlin: A. Asher, 1839.

2° (555 x 374mm). Lithographic title, 2ll. plate list, each leaf with a vignette, and 32 plates afer Vivian by L. Haghe on 29 leaves. Advertisement leaf at beginning and end, both advertising Vivian's Scenery of Spain. (Title and a few plates heavily spotted, one plate heavily browned, elsewhere lighter, chiefly marginal spotting.) Contemporary green roan-backed embossed boards, uniform with the previous volume.

FIRST EDITION. A sequel to the above volume on Spain alone, this series of lithographs after Vivian was largely devoted to Portugal, including views of Lisbon, Cintra, Setubal, Arrabida, Leiria, Coimbra, Porto, Villa do Conde, Guimarães, Braga, and Ponte do Lima. However, there are equally picturesque scenes from Vigo, Malaga, Granada, and Valencia. The order of the plates differs from the Abbey copy, and the tailpiece is of 'Coimbra Convent of Santa Cruz', not the 'Cross at Guimuraens'. Abbey Travel 138; Palau 372195.
