John Vine of Colchester (British, 1809-1867) Victoria, a Prize Pig oil on unlined canvas h:34 w:44 cm Provenance: The painting was commissioned by Mr and Mrs Sawyer who ran a public house in Tunstall, Suffolk. They kept a few animals and "Victoria", the subject of the painting, was one of their prize pigs. Their daughter Alice Sawyer inherited the painting. Alice Sawyer married and moved to Wickham Skeith in Suffolk and married a man called Elsden. They had several children, the eldest "Millie" (Wilhelmena) inherited the painting from her parents; By descent within the Elsden family to the present owners. Other Notes: John Vine was born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk but soon after his birth his family moved to Colchester. John Vince overcame considerable handicaps to become an artist in that he was born with only very rudimentary arms and legs. There is a letter from the Duke of Marlborough expressing his 'great surprise at the production of such an excellent picture by one labouring under such disadvantages'. John Vine was an important livestock artist who began painting a variety of animals for cleints in East Anglia. He travelled all over the country attending agricultural shows, and by the 1840s Vine had an established practice in livestock and equestrian portraits, attending attended all of the Royal Agricultural Society and Smithfield Shows, painting portraits of prizewinning livestock, commissioned by their proud owners. His animals, especially his pigs, are full of character and great charm.
