Description

A two year old filly in a landscape; and A two year old colt in a park, with a country house beyond signed and inscribed 'A 2 yrs. old filly bred by Mr. Wm. Pachard & Gaind. the First Prize at the East Suffolk Agril. Association held at Framlingham, Sept. 9th 1847 J. Vine pinx.' (along the lower edge); and signed and inscribed 'A Two year old colt bred by Mr. Wm. Pachard Saxmundham shown at Framlingham as extra stock Sept. 9th 1847 Painted by J. Vine of Colchester' (along the lower edge) oil on canvas, unframed 191/4 x 231/4 in. (48.9 x 59 cm.) a pair (2) NOTES Born with deformed arms and fingers, it has been suggested that Vine painted with his feet, but contemporary drawings show him holding a picture in one hand and a pencil in the other. As a child he was exhibited at country fairs as a curiosity called 'Master Vine', but by 1830 he had married and settled in Colchester. His patrons included the Royal Agricultural Society, Lord Weston and Lord Foley. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note that the estimate should read:- œ2500-3500.
