Da una serie di chiaroscuro simili per formato, tecnica e stile, identificati da Bartsch come le Virtù cristiane. Si è a lungo creduto che fossero da disegni del Parmigianino, ma recentemente la vicinanza di un disegno del Louvre attribuito a Perin Del Vaga e vicino alla figura della Fede, ha spostato l'attribuzione dell'invenzione. I sei intagli vengono riferiti alla bottega di Niccolò Vicentino in base a tecnica ed esecuzione. Bellissima prova su carta vergellata sottile. Al verso marchio di collezione impresso in nero con lettere "a.m. in cerchio singolo" (Collezione Masi, Bologna. Non su Lugt). (1)

Meisterwerke aus der Sammlung Georg Baselitz und der Albertina in Wien, hrsg. von Achim Gnann, München 2013, S.228-231, Nr. 111. -- -- Der seltene Holzschnitt gehört einer Folge von sechs Blatt mit Darstellungen der christlichen Tugenden an, von der bislang angenommen wurde, dass sie auf Vorzeichnungen Parmigianinos zurückgehen. Dabei wurden die Holzschnitte in der Vergangenheit unterschiedlichen Formschneidern zugeschrieben, die im 16. Jahrhundert an der Umsetzung von Parmigianinos Vorlagen in die Chiaroscuro-Technik beteiligt waren, unter ihnen Ugo da Carpi, Antonio da Trento und Niccolò Vicentino. Neuere Forschungen jedoch stellen die Verbindung der Holzschnitte mit Parmigianino in Frage. Achim Gnann verweist auf eine im Louvre aufbewahrte Federzeichnung, die eindeutig als Vorlage für einen der sechs Holzschnitte diente. Sie wurde früher der Raffael-Schule zugeordnet, gilt heute jedoch als Werk von Perino del Vaga, einer der Künstler, nach deren Vorlagen Vicentino nachweislich arbeitete. Die Zuschreibung der Holzschnitte an Niccolò Vicentino lässt sich, laut Gnann, auf die für Vicentinos Stil typische malerische und flüssige Applizierung der Farben, sowie die weiche Biegsamkeit der Posen stützen. - Ganz ausgezeichneter Druck mit der Einfassung und markantem Druckrelief verso. Leicht fleckig, am linken und oberen Rand winzige Läsuren, diese meist hinterlegt, oben mit dezenter Retusche, unten rechts kleiner hinterlegter vertikaler Randeinriss, sonst schön erhalten. Aus der Sammlung des Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Collection H. D. The woodcut itself was made by Vicentino between 1520-1550 after Parmigianino.

Das gesuchte Blatt in einem ganz ausgezeichneten und klaren Druck mit subtilem Kolorit, mit der Einfassungslinie. Aufgezogen, stellenweise etwas brüchig, überwiegend im unteren Blattbereich verschiedene sorgsam ergänzte Fehlstellen mit Federretuschen und Farbe, ganz geringfügig fleckig, Montierungsreste verso, im Gesamteindruck noch schönes Exemplar. Sehr selten.
