Lower middle inscribed in the printing plate: "Anne de Cleves [..]". Date: c. 1670 Description: Portrait of Anne of Cleves in a medallion hanging from a ribbon in a round arch. Two putti are playing below, the one on the left is holding another portrait medallion of Anne of 'Cleves in his hands, while the other is pointing into the distance with his right hand. At the back, the view opens onto a landscape with buildings Person: Anna von Kleve (1515 Düsseldorf - 1557 London) She was the fourth wife of the English King Henry VIII and was thus Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. Henry VIII planned another marriage for political reasons after the death of his third wife Jane Seymour. He chose Anne of Cleves because he liked her portrait painted by Hans Holbein, and signed the marriage contract without having met her personally. After their first meeting, he apparently felt disappointed in his expectations and had the marriage, concluded on 6 January 1540 in Greenwich, declared invalid six months later. (22 x 15 1/2 in), sheet 690 x 505 mm. (27 1/4 x 19 7/8 in), full margins, light even browning to the sheet, minor spotting and surface dirt, some small nicks and tears in margins, handling creases, bears [?]collector's initials 'P.B.' lower right [not in Lugt], [circa 1694]. Literature: Hollstein 103 ⁂ Scarce. The original painting by François de Troy is held in the Museé Condé, Chantilly.
