RefMas121121 This oil sketch can be linked to one of Verhaghen's most famous works, the depiction of the same subject painted for Tongerlo Abbey in 1781 that is today housed in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. Despite the fact that art historical research into Verhaghen's oeuvre is only just beginning and that only very few bozzetti and oil sketches by the artist are extant, we know that the practice of carrying out small-format oil studies to show potential customers what a finished work would eventually look like was widespread in Flanders, with Rubens being the most famous proponent of this method. The loose, spontaneous brushwork and “extra space” in the upper and lower margins of the work (in the final large-format version, the upper and lower edges of the work are more compacted) indicate that this piece is a bozzetto. Prof. Dr. Hans Vlieghe has confirmed the authenticity of this work in an email to the previous owner from 3.8.2017. The painting is listed in the database of the RKD in The Hague under the no. 294690 as an authentic work by Pièrre Joseph Verhaghen.

        Est: €18,000 - €22,000

RefMas121121 Signed and dated lower right: P. J. Verhaghen 1775 This work depicts the mother of the Persian King Darius III Sisygambis and his wife Stateira with his children and concubines kneeling before the Macedonian King Alexander the Great following his victory in the Battle of Issos in 333 B.C. This motif from ancient Greek history was popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and has here been rendered in a large-format work by the painter Pierre Joseph Verhagen from Brabant. The work could be identical to a piece mentioned by U. Thieme and F. Becker in their biographical dictionary of artists as belonging to the Ahrenberg collection in Brussels (vol. 34, Leipzig 1940, p. 247) but on loan to the Ghent art museum at the time of writing. Verhagen was born in Aerschot and is considered one of the most important painters active in Brabant in the 18th century. Following his training in Antwerp under Balthasar Beschey, he settled in Leuven, where he primarily painted religious works for the abbeys of Löwen and Brabant (see also lot 1604, an oil study for a large-format depiction of the Expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael painted for the Abbey of Tongerlo). He also occasionally painted mythological or historical paintings, to which the present large scale work is an impressive testament.
