PROVENANCE

Michel-François Pelckmans, l'Hôtel de Cologne, Louvain, 1773;
Corneille Cels;
His sale, Brussels, Le Roy, 19 April 1864, lot 80;
Le Chevalier Soenens, Ghent, by 1875, and by whom probably acquired at the above sale;
By whom sold, Brussels, 29 December 1877, for 290 francs;
M. Desiré Van den Hecke, Ghent, by 1883;
His (deceased) sale, Brussels, De Brauwere, 17 April 1884, lot 151 (where erroneously described as having been sold in the Verhagen sale, Louvain);
Victor Brughmans collection, Louvain, by 1933.

EXHIBITED

Malines, Exposition d'art ancien, 1883, no. 365, where lent by M. Desiré Vanden Hecke, Ghent.

LITERATURE

Wekelijks Nieuws uyt Loven, 28 November 1773;
E. Van Even, De Schilder P.-J. Verhaghen, Leuven 1875, and 2nd edition Antwerp 1903 (both editions as whereabouts unknown);
V. de Munter, Pierre-Joseph Verhaghen et son oeuvre, Brussels 1932, pp. 97-98, reproduced plate XIV.

NOTE

According to De Munter, Verhaghen made a copy of this work, on canvas but smaller (79 by 63 cm.) and unsigned. This copy is probably the painting mentioned alongside the present work in Wekelijks Nieuws uyt Loven (see Literature) as in the Lambrechts collection, Leuven. This copy can probably also be identified with the painting listed by the Netherlands Art Institute, no. 46132, as in the collection of Mrs. Jacobs, Brussels.
