    River with Fishermen

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Salomon van Ruysdael Naarden um 1600 - Haarlem um 1670 , River with Fishermen, 1630s, oil/wood, 32,5 x 44 cm, lo. le. monogr. SvR, some rest., Dutch landscape painter from a family of artists. Nothing is known about his early career; judged by his earliest paintings he might have been a pupil of P. Molijn a. E. van de Velde, influences of J. van Goyen are also obvious. In 1623 he joined the Haarlem's St. Luke's guild, in 1648 he was elected deacon. In 1659 he became mayor of a quarter of Haarlem, a costly office from which the success of the painter may be deduced. His son Jacob Salomonsz. R. continued to paint like his father.

Philip and the Eunuch signed with initials and dated 'svr 1630' (lower left) oil on canvas 301/4 x 381/4 in. (76.8 x 97 cm.) PROVENANCE with A.H. Buttery, London; Christie's, London, 7 June 1912, lot 89, as 'S. van Ruysdael' (unsold). with A.S. Drey, Munich, 1915. Dr. K. Erasmus, Berlin, 1931. LITERATURE W. Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, Berlin, 1975, p. 85, no. 118. NOTES The subject was popular in Dutch art at the time, being treated by Lastman four times in his career (for the first time in 1623), and by Rembrandt three times in oil and once as an etching, including an oil of the same date as the present picture. Salomon himself had painted the subject in 1634, in a closely related composition. The story derives from Acts, VIII: 27 ff., and tells how a eunuch, the treasurer of Queen Candace of Ethiopia, whilst returning from Jerusalem, was converted to Christianity through a discussion with the apostle, Philip, about a passage from Isaiah.

Salomon van Ruysdael (Naarden c.1600-1670 Haarlem)

    Est: $450,000 - $550,000

The Valkhof at Nijmegen with a ferry crossing the river Waal signed with monogram and dated 'SVR 165*' (lower left, on the side of the ferry) oil on canvas 283/4 x 403/4 in. (73 x 103.5 cm.) PROVENANCE H. L. Visser. EXHIBITION On loan to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia, 1995 - 2000. NOTES Salomon van Ruysdael was born in Naarden, Gooiland. He was originally called Salomon de Gooyer, but he and his brother, Isaack, who was also an artist, adopted the name Ruysdael from castle Ruisdael (or Ruisschendaal) near their father's hometown. Salomon spelled his name Ruysdael as distinguished from his more famous nephew Jacob, who used Ruisdael. In 1623 Salomon entered the painters guild in Haarlem, and his earliest known dated painting is of 1626. As early as 1628 he was praised as a landscapist by the chronicler of Haarlem, Samuel van Ampzing. Although Salomon seems to have lived and worked in Haarlem all his life, he probably made several trips through the Netherlands, painting views of, among other places, Leiden, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Arnhem, Alkmaar, Rhenen and Dordrecht. Together with Pieter de Molijn, Salomon van Ruysdael and Jan van Goyen were the leading 'tonal' landscape painters of their generation, and they laid the foundation for the classic period of Dutch landscape painting that followed. The present lot is one of six views of a famous landmark in Holland that the artist is known to have painted, the tower or castle of Het Valkhof (falcon court), a fortress since Roman times, that was set within the walls of Nijmegen, and derived its name from the falconry established there by one of Charlemagne's sons. It was an immensely popular subject for Dutch artists in the first half of the 17th century, and was painted on numerous occasions by both Jan van Goyen and Aelbert Cuyp. Wolfgang Stechow was unaware of the present painting at the time that he wrote his monograph on Ruysdael, but he does record four other versions of the composition, three of which are executed on canvas, and one on panel (W. Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, Berlin, 1975, p. 79, no. 70; p. 121, no. 349A; p. 122, nos. 349B and p. 123, no.354). A fifth version of Nijmegen by Ruysdael was sold with the collection of Linda and Gerald Guterman, Sotheby's, New York, 14 January 1988, lot 33 ($900,000). Nijmegen was popularly known as the capital city of the ancient Batavians, the supposed precursors of the Dutch. Their leader, the facially disfigured Gaius Julius Civilis (known in the 17th century as Claudius Civilis), was fiercely opposed to Roman rule and set fire to his capital in order to prevent its use by the Romans. Netherlandish scholars and artists (particularly Rembrandt in his famous Oath of the Batavians in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm) became especially interested in the Batavian revolt because it was such a compelling ancient precedent for the Dutch struggle for independence from Spain. These images of the city must therefore not just have been exercises in civic pride, but representative of a national mythology and a tangible link with the classical past. The present lot is sold with a letter from Willem van der Watering dated 5 August 1980 and a photocertificate from L. J. Bol, dated 20 June 1980, both stating that the painting is by Salomon van Ruysdael.

A river landscape with fishermen and a sportsman shooting duck oil on canvas 24 5/8 x 341/2 in. (62.5 x 87.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Acquired by Beriah Botfield (1807-1863) in Leiden, by 1848, by whom bequeathed to the Thynne family. LITERATURE B. Botfield, Catalogue of Pictures in the possession of Beriah Botfield Esq. at Norton Hall, London, 1848, p. 46, 'Duck Shooting'. B. Botfield, Catalogue of Pictures at Norton Hall, London, 1863, p. 35. NOTES Unpublished since its inclusion in Beriah Botfield's 1863 catalogue, this is an early treatment of Salomon van Ruysdael's favourite theme, datable on stylistic grounds to the early 1630s. He began to paint river scenes in or before 1631, in similar fashion to Jan van Goyen with whom he must have been in close contact. The monochromatic palette, made up predominantly of greens, greys, browns and blues is typical of his output at this time, as is the flickering application of paint in the trees (technically very close to Van Goyen), and the emphasis given to the reflections in the ruffled water. In these respects, as well as in the details, the present picture relates closely to a picture dated 1632 in the National Gallery, London. In both works, Ruysdael employs a strong right to left diagonal composition established by the wooded river bank and sailing vessels, which are positioned at intervals receding into the distance. Each picture features a fishing boat laying out or drawing in their nets, the floats of which can be seen in an arc on the water's surface in the left middleground, and, in the right foreground, a sportsman at the front of a punt, who is about to open fire on a duck. In the same vein, the present picture can be compared to another early river scene in the National Galleery, similarly dated by Stechow to circa 1632-3.

(54.1 x 79.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Sir Emmanuel Felix Agar, M.P., 7 Stratford Place, London. Beriah Botfield (1807-1863), by 1848, by whom bequeathed to the Thynne family. LITERATURE B. Botfield, Catalogue of Pictures at Norton Hall, London, 1863, p. 35. W. Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, Berlin, 1975, p. 150, no. 523B. NOTES The artist joined the Haarlem guild of Saint Luke in 1623 under his given name Salomon de Gooyer. Soon after, he followed the example of his eldest brother Isaack and adopted the name Ruysdael from the castle of Ruijschdaal near their father's home in Gooiland. He quickly established his reputation in the 1630s, along with Jan van Goyen, as one of the pioneers of the so-called 'tonal' landscape, innovative for the unprecedented naturalism and atmospheric effects they brought to the genre. The river landscape was Salomon's favourite subject and one that he addressed repeatedly throughout his career. He first treated the theme in or before 1631 and subsequently produced, according to Stechow ( op. cit. ), some 280 paintings of the kind. The present work is a classic mature treatment of the river landscape theme. Salomon employs a strong diagonal composition established by the flow of the river from the left foreground into the right background, with a cluster of trees serving as a repoussoir on the right side, balanced by a group of cattle on the left. The placement of boats at intervals along the river leads the eye downstream out of the shaded foreground towards the sunlit horizon. This, combined with the effect of the churches of Alkmaar that punctuate the horizon on the left, produces an strong sense of distance and spatial harmony. This clear structure characterises much of the artist's work from around this time. By 1650, the trees in his landscapes are reduced in scale and greater emphasis given to open river views; his palette becomes brighter and more varied and more attention is paid to the clouds. This is wonderfully evidenced here in the fluid rendition of the late afternoon sky. Stechow records four other pictures with the same date: a River Scene in the Royal collection, Buckingham Palace, a Landscape with Arnhem in the distance in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, a Sailing boat and Dinghy sold in these Rooms, 25 November 1960, lot 82, as 'van Goyen', and a View of Rhenen now in the E.G. Bhrle Foundation, Zurich. The variety of cities depicted (Arnhem, Rhenen and Alkmaar), might suggest that Salomon was travelling in 1651. Although he lived in Haarlem his whole life it is thought that he made extensive trips around the country; he also painted views of Leiden, Amersfoort and Utrecht at different times in his career. However, in 1651 Salomon is recorded as a merchant dealing in blue dye for Haarlem's bleacheries - like many of his contemporaries, he supplemented his earnings in areas that had no connection with painting - making it unlikely that he would have had the time to travel in that year. More likely, Salomon worked up these pictures in his studio either from memory or using topographical prints as an aide memoir. This notion is supported by the fact that many of his pictures from the late 1640s and 50s were applied directly onto the support without evidence of underdrawing, as seems to be case in the present picture, although no technical photographs of it have been made. In any event, a View of the Sint Laurenskerk, dated 1644, sold in the Rooms, 10 July 1987, lot 44, implies that Salomon had visited Alkmaar in or before that year. Panoramic views of Alkmaar are comparatively rare and it is noteworthy that Van Goyen never painted the city. The present view seems to have inspired a picture of about the same size painted six years later ( ibid. pp. 23 and 128, no. 376, pl. 27 and fig. 38), since sold in these Rooms, 8 July 1988, lot 44 (œ110,000). Sir Emmanuel Felix Agar was the natural son of Welbore Ellis Agar (1735-1805). His father, the younger brother of the 1st Viscount Clifden and elder brother of the 1st Earl of Normanton, assembled in his lifetime a prodigious collection of Old Masters. These were largely acquired abroad, for the most part under the aegis of Gavin Hamilton. On his death, having no direct heir, he bequeathed the collection to Emmanuel Felix and his elder brother, Welbore Felix. Those two put the collection up for sale at Christie's; the sale was scheduled for 2-3 May 1806, however before even the English copies of the catalogue were printed, the brothers had been approached by Lord Grosvenor with a view to an en bloc purchase. An initial price of œ40,000 was suggested but was negotiated down to the final figure of 30,000 gns., agreed by mid-April. The present picture was not a part of that sale, making it quite reasonable to suppose that the two sons may have retained a small part of the collection, including this picture.

    *SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL (1600/03-1670)

    Est: $100,000 - $150,000

signed and dated on the boat S.VRUYSDAEL 1644 (VR linked) oil on panel Salomon van Ruysdael is best known for his atmospheric river scenes, such as the present example, that he began painting in the 1630s. These scenes, both real and imagined, were painted in and around Haarlem where the artist lived and worked. Though his teacher is unknown, his earliest works (circa 1626)-29) reflect the influence of Esias van de Velde who worked in Haarlem from 1609-18. Together with his contemporary, Jan van Goyen, Ruysdael was one of the leading proponents in the 1630s of ``tonal'' landscape painting characterized by their extreme restraint of color. By the 1640s, Ruysdael began to move away from this monochromatic palette, introducing more varied hues. The composition of this work of 1644 is very similar to a Ruysdael, dated 1645, in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (see W. Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, 1975, p. 148, no. 514, pl. 30). Both paintings share the same dense, wooded area to the left which sweeps away towards a fishing village on the horizon. In the deep shadows of the foliage to the left smallcraft, laden with figures, emerge towards the casual anglers in the foreground and in the middle distance yachts sail away from the riverbank. The paintings, which are both on panel, are executed in a very similar technique; the foliage is painted in a thin, transparent style using different hues of green and brown and the horizon is painted with thick, creamy, broad bands of paint which are tinted with subtle hints of pink.

NOTES We are grateful to Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. Dr. Beck notes that the picture has always been regarded as an autograph work by Salomon van Ruysdael, and that the date of 1632 fits exactly with Salomon's style of that time. However the picture's condition demands a qualified attribution. Dr. Beck, judging from a photograph when with Capricorne, has stated his belief that 'the picture is without doubt by Salomon van Ruysdael'.

EXHIBITION Dusseldorf, 1904, no. 379. Amsterdam, Gallery J. Goudstikker, Salomon van Ruysdael, January-February 1936, no. 49. NOTES Stechow notes, loc. cit., that the village in the background has in the past been identified as Heenvliet. As noted by Stechow, op. cit., p. 26, Van Ruysdael's marine paintings are very rarely dated; the present lot was probably painted in circa 1650, when the artist's paintings were characterised by rich colour schemes, with deep blue skies and touches of colour, nonetheless retaining the soft, harmonious atmosphere of his monochrome period. At this time, as in the present picture, which can be compared with the River landscape, signed and dated 1650, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Van Ruysdael's compositions were frequently dominated by one or two ships, often with strong verticals. Typical, too, are the waves painted with subtle grey and brown tones, and the soft transitions between the sky and the horizon.
