Description

A wooded river landscape with duck hunters in the foreground and sailing boats beyond signed with monogram 'SVR' (center right) oil on panel 153/4 x 25 1/8 in. (40 x 64.3 cm.) PROVENANCE Mrs. S.L. Barnard, Cave Castle, South Cave, Yorkshire, England; Christie's, London, 25 November 1938, lot 99. with Gebr. Douwes, Amsterdam, 1939. LITERATURE W. Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, Berlin, 1975, p. 144, no. 486a. NOTES The present painting can be dated to the early 1640s and compared with a number of river landscapes of similar tonality which Stechow ( op. cit., p. 21) characterized by their suffusion of golden sunlight. These include a View of Arnhem, signed and dated 1643, offered at Christie's, Amsterdam, 11 May 1994, lot 156; a River Landscape on a cloudy day, signed and dated 1641, Christie's, Amsterdam, 7 May 1996, lot 76; and a River Landscape with a view of the Church of Nordosten, signed and dated 1641, offered at Christie's, London, 8 December 1989, lot 65.
