J.74.174 (as Jean Valade) We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for suggesting the attribution to Jean Valade on the basis of a photograph. The inscription on the back identifies the sitter of the present work as Marie Anne du Pré de Saint-Maur (1731–1754), daughter of Pierre du Pré de Saint-Maur and Marie Madeleine Bellanger. Pierre du Pré de Saint-Maur served as a councilor at the Parliament of Paris. Marie Anne’s sister, Colombe Madeleine, was married to Jean Louis de Garnier des Garets, seigneur d’Ars and de Garets, who held the positions of page to the Queen and second lieutenant in the King’s Guards. According to Neil Jeffares the handling is typical of Jean Valade’s work, and the artist was close to this family: in the Salon de 1755 he exhibited a pastel of her sister, Mme Garnier des Garets (see op. cit. Jeffares, no. J.74.213) and of the latter’s husband (see op. cit. Jeffares, J.74.211). Indeed five members of the Dupré de Saint-Maur family, including Marie Anne – the sitter in the present painting – were witnesses at Valade’s wedding in 1752. She may well have been an amateur artist, as she is shown here with an oil palette at an easel.
