The Golliwogg’s fox-hunt. Originalhalbleinenband mit farbiger Deckelillustration. - Florence Kate Upton (1873-1922), begann bereits mit 16 Jahren als professionelle Illustratorin zu arbeiten. Sie zeichnete für Autoren, deren Geschichten und Shortstories zuerst in Zeitschriften veröffentlicht wurden und illustrierte später auch deren Bücher. Die vorliegenden gehören zu den ersten einer Reihe von Bilderbüchern, die Florence Upton zu Versen ihrer Mutter entworfen hat. »Die klare Bildstruktur, die auffällige Betonung der Technik und das lithographische Druckverfahren lassen erkennen, daß hier ein neuer Bilderbuchstil für das 20. Jahrhundert aufkommt« (Bilderwelt). Insgesamt erschienen 13 Geschichten mit Abenteuern der von Florence Kate Upton erfundenen Figur »Golliwog« und ihren Puppen-Freunden, 1909 erschien der letzte Band. 1917 ließ Florence Kate Upton ihre originalen Puppen und Zeichnungen bei Christie’s London versteigern - mit dem Erlös finanzierte sie den Kauf eines Krankenwagens für den Fronteinsatz, der »Golliwog« getauft wurde. I. Einband und Vorsätze erneuert. Seiten fleckig, einige mit kleinen Einrissen. Zwei Seiten vertikal durchtrennt und mit (altem) Klebeband repariert. - II. Einband fleckig und etwas berieben, Ecken bestoßen. Bindung gelockert. Seiten meist fleckig und am Rand leicht geknickt, einige im Falz geklebt. - III. Deckel angestaubt, Ecken bestoßen. (Oblong 4to) 8 1/4 x11, original red cloth-backed pictorial boards with color lithographed front cover. First Edition. The fourth book in the collectible Golliwogg series, which had great success and continued until 1909. Written by Bertha Upton (1849-1912) and illustrated by her daughter Florence K. Upton (1873-1922). Oddly enough, they did not copyright their idea about "Golliwogg," otherwise they could have made a fortune on this phenomena that branched into various games, wallpapers, greeting cards and other merchandisable items, comparable to the modern-day hysteria of Harry Potter or Pokémon.
