(Oblong 4to) 8 1/4 x11, original red cloth-backed pictorial boards with color lithographed front cover. First Edition. The fourth book in the collectible Golliwogg series, which had great success and continued until 1909. Written by Bertha Upton (1849-1912) and illustrated by her daughter Florence K. Upton (1873-1922). Oddly enough, they did not copyright their idea about "Golliwogg," otherwise they could have made a fortune on this phenomena that branched into various games, wallpapers, greeting cards and other merchandisable items, comparable to the modern-day hysteria of Harry Potter or Pokémon.

Corners bumped, extremities rubbed, faint insect wear to spine, light soiling; lacks front free endpaper, front hinge cracking, rear hinge repaired, some of the illustrations have added blue coloring and writing (presumably from a child), several pages throughout with carefully repaired short and long tears chiefly to bottom margins, bookplate; still a bright and attractive copy, good or better.
