        Ueda, Shoji: Selected images

        Est: €1,500 - €1,800

Selected images. Circa 1947-60/printed 1970s. 5 gelatin silver press prints (3 on RC paper). Each circa 16 x 16 cm (25,3 x 20 cm). SHOJI UEDA (1913-2000) Spring (from the series 'Children the Year Around'), Japan

        Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Gelatin silver print, printed 1970's 36,3 x 24 cm (14.3 x 9.4 in) Signed by the photographer in ink in the margin and on the reverse (Japanese), photographer's stamp on the reverse LITERATURE Una Linea Sutil (ed.), Shoji Ueda 1913-2000, Barcelona 2005, p. 104; Shoji Ueda, Sand Dunes/Seasons of the Children, Tokyo 1978, p. 21. Shoji Ueda created his life's work in the surroundings of his native village in the remote province of Tottori, also known as "San'in" or "Shadow of the Mountains". There, far from Japan's cultural and economic centres, the nineteen-year-old Ueda opened a photographer's studio. Apart from his work as a commercial photographer, which he pursued all his life, Ueda created a highly original visual world in his personal projects. While other Japanese photographers of the post-war era preferred a clear documentary style, Ueda integrated subjective, often surrealistic components within his images. The present photograph is taken from the series Children the year round, depicting children and public festivities throughout the four seasons. The work is reminiscent of Yugkiguni by Hiroshi Hamaya, who also documented Japanese rural life and customs. Unlike this classical reportage, however, Ueda mixes documentary photographs with poetically staged pictures. In the present photograph, the mask is the element which lends the everyday situation of the girl in front of the farmhouse a fairy-tale atmosphere. Ueda came to international attention when Edward Steichen invited him to participate in the Museum of Modern Art's 1958 exhibition Photography in Retrospect. The series Children the year round was published in 1971 in the book Warabegoyomi (Chuokoron-sha). In 1995 the Shoji Ueda Museum of Photography was opened in Kishimoto, housing approximately 12,000 vintage prints by the artist.
