Turner, as stated in his interview with the Baltimore Sun newspaper in 1912. Subsequently he always signed his works C. Y. Turner to the point that he was known as Cy Turner instead of Charles Yardley Turner. He generally signed with all capital letters. He painted genre scenes in which the human figure was the focus of the painting. He was especially noted for large mural decorations on public buildings, hotels and theaters. Often his subjects were historical, depicting Puritans, Revolutionary War scenes and Indians.Turner was born in Baltimore and studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating in 1870. He then went to New York City and enrolled at the National Academy of Design from 1872 to 1875, and in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens, Baron Mihaly Munkacsy and Leon Bonnat.He returned to New York in 1882 and exhibited regularly at the National Academy, where he was voted to Associate membership in 1893. Three years later he was made a full Academician. He became interested in mural painting while he was Assistant Director of decorations for the World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893. His murals can be found in numerous public and government buildings throughout the mid-western and eastern United States including the Library of Congress, and the capitol building of Wisconsin. TURNER, Charles Yardley (American, 1850-1919): Pastel Sketch for Large Mural of Pontiac and Rogers, sight size 13.5'' x 27.5'', signed lower left, titled mid-margin and dated May 27, 1913 lower right. Framed, 22'' x 36''. The finished mural resides to this day at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse in the Court of Appeals Court Room, Cleveland Ohio. The painting depicts an important historical event in the meeting of Rogers Rangers with Pontiac, a French ally and Chief of the Ottawas. Robert Rogers and his Rangers had traveled west at the end of the French and Indian War to take possession of the outposts. Pontiac initially ordered the Rangers to leave the country as he claimed that the land belonged to the Native Americans. Rogers, however, explained his mission to Chief Pontiac, and announced that the French and Indian War had ended, and peace was declared. Apparently convinced, Pontiac and other Native American leaders eventually agreed to smoke the peace pipe. Charles Yardley Turner, born in Baltimore Maryland in 1850, studied art in Europe under French masters. Turner was the assistant director of decoration at the Chicago 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition and colorist for the entire 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Turner also painted ''The Trial of Captain John Smith at Jamestown, June 10, 1607, East Wall, Court of Appeals Court Room at the Cuyahoga County Court House as well the murals for the Essex County Court House in Newark, New Jersey, the Hudson County Courthouse, in Jersey City, and the Baltimore Court House.

White & Co., 1929), 470 One of several important Puritan scenes painted by Turner, the work is based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "The Courtship of Miles Standish." Depicted is the wedding of John Alden to Priscilla who rides "a snow-white bull . . . like a queen, not plod along like a peasant." Miles Standish, who had earlier sought Priscilla's hand, takes part in the wedding ceremony, but remains among the celebrants. Turner captured the eternal nature of love and marriage, depicting the scene in a pastoral setting, as recognized by reviewers when he exhibited the painting in the spring annual of the National Academy of Design in 1886. The Critic noted the painting's demonstration of "a great deal of careful and serious work" and that both the landscape and figures were "imbued with the spirit of early New England." Such scenes were intended to keep the early history of America alive and Turner was duly given attention in the Chicago Daily Tribune for creating for "himself a distinct position in New York art as a painter of American types of a semi-poetic and semi-realistic cast."
