      I Dewa Gde Raka Turas (1917-1993) 'Balinese tooth filing ceremony', signed l.r., canvas. 68 x 50 cm. Provenance: formerly in the colletion of Petra Vandiver (1911-1992), who was married to Marion Vandiver (1913–1991), an important man in the history of Garuda Indonesia. Mr. Vandiver graduated from the Dallas Aviation School. He represented the Link Blind-Flying Instrument Co. in Paris at the time the German army occupied Paris in 1940. He was interned there, but escaped in1941 to Portugal and returned to the United States. Later he became a test pilot for Lockheed Aircraft in California and a director of Scandinavian Airlines in Stockholm, Sweden. During this period, the I.C.A.O. Division of the United Nations, asked him to organize and establish Garuda Airlines in Indonesia. The Vandivers lived seven years in Indonesia and were friends of Rudolf Bonnet. Later Mr. Vandiver became Far Eastern Representative for Lockheed Aircraft, based in Hong Kong. At the end of her live Madam Vandiver moved to Stockholm where she passed away in 1992.

Inscribed with title (handwritten by Rudolf Bonnet) and artist’s name in the lower margin. Literature: Hooykaas-van Leeuwen Boomkamp, Dr. Jacoba, Sprookjes en Verhalen van Bali, Den Haag, The Netherlands, 1956, illustrated on p.72. NOTE: a copy of this book accompanies the drawing. Provenance: private collection Rudolf Bonnet, who probably acquired the drawing directly from Turas; Christie’s Amsterdam, April 21, 1998, lot 46.

      I Dewa Gde Raka Turas (1917-1993), 'Werk op de sawah', gesigneerd, doek, afm. 135 x 290 cm. Raka Turas leerde van zijn vader A.A. Rai Plase, een bekende beeldhouwer en wayangschilder. Later werd hij leerling van Bonnet en lid van de kunstenaarsvereniging 'Pitah Maha'. Sinds 1948 leidde hij schilders op van Peliatan en Ubud. Naast schilder was hij ook beeldhouwer en danser.
