Johann Nicolaus Treu (1734-1786) Johann Nicolaus Treu was born into a family of artists, primarily active during the 18th century and the early 19th century in Bamberg. The works of the family were particularly influenced by the paintings of the Rococo. Johann Nicolaus was specialized in portraiture. He came to Würzburg under Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, where he was a valet, court painter and gallery inspector on duty. He provided the painting of the high altar of the Augustinian church in Würzburg and was responsible for the decoration of the Second guest room in the Northern Imperial Rooms of the Würzburg Residence. • Nicolaus Treu (German, 1734-1786) - Portrait of a Monsier Pasquier - oil on canvas
      Nov. 29, 2012

Nicolaus Treu (German, 1734-1786) - Portrait of a Monsier Pasquier - oil on canvas

      Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Nicolaus Treu (German, 1734-1786) Portrait of a Monsieur Pasquier , seated half-length, in blue at a table, holding a letter oil on canvas The letter transcribed in translation reads: "Sir, please pay to Troy, the Prince of Würzburg's painter, the sum of 1300 livres received from the said lord. Please accord him your recommendation. He has painted my portrait. Let it be known among other art-lovers". h:72 w: 59 cm Provenance: Bought at Versailles in 1847 and by descent. The letter, held by the sitter, identifies the painter as Nicolaus Treu (1734-1786) the best-known member of a prominent Jewish family of artists based at the Court of Bamberg, who in 1761 was in the service of the Prince-Bishop of Wurzburg, Adam-Friedrich von Seinsheim (1708-1779) who is mentioned in the letter held by the sitter. Treu, who was married to a Frenchwoman, studied under Carle van Loo (1705-1765) and as this portrait was painted in the year the latter died, that might explain the artist being in Paris. It was also the year that Treu was elevated to a Court Painter to the Prince-Bishop. Treu goes to Rome in 1775, after the death of his wife in 1772. In a letter of 13 August 1775, von Seinsheim, writing to his brother Joseph Franz, says of Treu "er ist ein geschikter Mahler" ("he is a talented painter"). In an earlier letter that month the Prince-Bishop tells his brother, who was a diplomat at the Court of Bavaria, that Treu is going to Rome "to perfect his talents even more". The sitter in the present painting, as yet to be identified, is possibly a forebear of Etienne-Denis Pasquier (1767-1862) Chancellor of France, ennobled by King Louis-Philippe in 1842. Clearly from the account ledgers behind him, and his sizeable diamond ring, he is a man of substance. We are grateful to Dr Susan Wharton and Anna Schultz for their considerable assistance with the catalogue entry.
