The 'Tennyson', named after poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, was built in 1865 by John Currier in Newburyport, Massachusetts for William Graves, whose son Edward went down with her as Captain when she was overwhelmed by a rogue wave off Mauritius in 1873.

      OOC - Ship's Portrait of Extreme Clipper Ship 'Sunny South' by Charles Torrey (MA, 1859-1921), signed lr and dated 1916, in gold molded frame, SS: 25" x 41 1/4", OS: 30" x 46 1/4", very good, untouched condition. This ship was built in 1854 by George Steers, Williamsburg, NY, sold in 1859 to Cuba, captured by British in 1860 with 800 slaves on board, condemned as a store ship in the Royal Navy, wrecked in 1861 off Mozambique.

Torrey 1919", oil on canvas, 20 x 30 in.; original gilt and black-painted frame. Original stretcher and tacking edge, minor retouch at top right edge, abrasions upper left, craquelure, canvas loose, stretcher stamped by Boston, Massachusetts colorman; frame with abrasions. Formerly property of Margaret Cushing, last owner of Cushing House before it became headquarters building for Newburyport, Massachusetts Historical Society.

      LARGE OIL ON CANVAS SHIP PORTRAIT "FEARLESS" FLYING AMERICAN FLAG BY CHARLES TORREY (1859-1921).

      Three-mast ship in full sail sails right to left in blue/green/white sea. Green and yellow hull flying flags off mast. Signed and titled bottom right and dated 1914. Housed in its original gilt frame. The Peabody Museum has 8 examples of this Boston area artist. SIZE: 26" h x 42" w. CONDITION: Small area of cracking and lifting of paint in sail, otherwise very good. 9-9179$ $65 IMPORTANT AND RARE CHIPPENDALE BALL AND CLAW FOOT MAHOGANY TESTER BED. Front two posts are stop-fluted which ends in ring turnings. Well carved knee with leaf carving. Small punch and stipple decoration around carved leaves, large ball with long carved talons. Top of post has ring turning with square-block top continuing to a simple turning. Brass end caps over bolt holes. Foot board posts are tapered octagon-carved. Simple pine head board may be replacement. This bed comes from a fine home in Bangor, Maine. Has some of the attributions of known Salem, Massachusetts beds. Square replaced tester with finery included. SIZE: 82"h x 51"w x 70"l. CONDITION: Very good condition. Four small holes in each front post where it appears something was mounted. 9-91554.
