Unsigned. With confirmation from Ulrike Probst, the daughter of the first owner WIlhelm Wulff, Soest, from 16 Oct. 2013. In 2017/18, the reverse glass painting was part of the Volkswagen Foundation research project "Reverse Glass Painting as a Technique of Classical Modernism 1905-1955", Museum Penzberg - Campendonk Collection, Penzberg. Arnold Topp, born in Soest in 1887 and living mainly in Brandenburg since 1913, made contact with the well-known Berlin gallery "Der Sturm" and its founder Herwarth Walden at an early age. Right at the beginning of his artistic career, Walden included him in the ranks of 'his' artists and mentioned him in the same breath as Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Kurt Schwitters and Franz Marc. Topp greatly admired Walden and was aware that his artistic success would depend on him, the champion of Expressionism. Walden took on an almost paternal role for the aspiring artist and knew that he had a diamond to cut. During the war, Walden kept in touch and sent him the magazine "Der Sturm" to the front (see Rainer Enders, Arnold Topp. Ein Lebensbild, Weimar 2007, p. 37). Topp's artistic oeuvre encompassed a wide range of techniques - he worked in both oil and watercolour, mastered all common graphic techniques and also created reverse glass paintings from 1916 onwards. The present work, owned by Topp's friend and sculptor Wilhelm Wulff, is one of the few surviving reverse glass paintings. With dark blue, green, orange and yellow areas of colour that have developed an attractive pattern due to the corroding tin, the glass painting "Malven" is one of Topp's earliest purely abstract works. It was exhibited at the "Der Sturm" gallery in 1923, the year it was created, and thus has an excellent provenance. As a large part of his entire oeuvre, especially the reverse glass paintings, was destroyed by the artist's early death in 1945, the work "Malven" is of particular significance.

Greifwald, editor of the catalogue raisonné Arnold Topp ESTIMATE € 10000 - 20000 STARTING PRICE € 10000 German expressionist and cubist Arnold Topp Arnold Topp is known for his colorful, cubist images, which often contain figurative, landscape and architectural elements. The compositional inner dynamic is characteristic of his work; his oil paintings are characterized by glowing colors. As early as 1904, Arnold Topp was on friendly terms with the Soest artists Wilhelm Morgner, Wilhelm Wulff and Eberhard Viegener. In 1910, Topp began artistic training at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts, at the seminar for drawing teachers with Lothar von Kunowski. During this time he came into contact with the Rhenish Expressionists. In 1913 he became a sports and later drawing teacher at the Saldernsche Realgymnasium in Brandenburg an der Havel. From there, Topp maintained his contact with Herwarth Walden's gallery “Der Sturm”. He had seven exhibitions there from 1917 to 1926, including: with Lajos Ébneth, Nell Walden and Kurt Schwitters. Until 1929, participation in numerous exhibitions followed in Germany, but also in the USA, the Soviet Union, Japan and France. He was also an illustrator for the magazine “Das Hohe Ufer”. During regular stays in Berlin, friendships developed with fellow artists such as Bruno Taut and Georg Muche. In 1915 Topp was drafted into military service. Wounded in the Battle of Verdun, he only returned to Brandenburg in 1918 after hospital stays, where he continued to work as a teacher. Arnold Topp is one of the founding members of the Art Works Council, founded in 1918. In 1937, four of his works were confiscated from public collections in the "Entartete Kunst" (“Degenerate Art”) campaign. In 1940, following the suicide of one of his lovers, he was transferred to Meseritz in eastern Brandenburg. In 1944 he was drafted into the Volkssturm and then transferred to the Wehrmacht. Die revolutionäre Stimmung zum Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs schlug sich in vielfältiger Weise auch im Künstlerischen nieder, und so war Arnold Topp 1918 Gründungsmitglied des Arbeitsrates für Kunst. Er hatte bereits seit 1915 immer wieder in Herwarth Waldens Berliner Galerie "Der Sturm" ausgestellt und galt als einer der großen deutschen Kubisten; sein Name wurde in einem Atemzug mit Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall und Kurt Schwitters genannt. STILLLEBEN MIT WEIßER TASSE UND ZIGARETTE Öl auf Leinwand. 30 x 41 cm. Rechts mittig signiert „A. Topp“ und datiert „(19)21“. Arnold Topp war ein deutscher Maler des Expressionismus und Kubismus. 1910 studierte er an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Düsseldorf. Bereits 1915 wurden seine Arbeiten in Herwarth Waldens Galerie „Der Sturm“ ausgestellt. Bis 1929 beteiligte er sich an zahlreichen Ausstellungen, darunter auch in den USA und der Sowjetunion. Seit 1945 gilt der Künstler als verschollen und wurde 1961 für tot erklärt. Im Mittelpunkt dieses kubistischen Stilllebens steht eine Tasse mit Henkel auf einer Untertasse, dazu eine senkrecht stehende Zigarette, von der Rauch senkrecht nach oben steigt. Photographer unknown. Portrait of the artist Arnold Topp. 1919. Vintage gelatin silver print. 14 x 9 cm. Signed and dated by Arnold Topp in lower edge; annotated by the artist in pencil on the verso. The expressionist artist Arnold Topp was a member of the artists' group Der Sturm. Along with the work of other important expressionist and modern artists, his paintings were shown in the exhibition "Entartete Kunst" (1937). In 1945 he was drafted into the Volkssturm and as of then was reported as missing. His wife Elsa Topp declared him officially dead in 1961. - Some gold paint marks in lower corners, minimal oxidation mirroring in lower edge, otherwise in very good condition.

Topp, dessen Werk seit den 90er Jahren wiederentdeckt wird und die ihm gebührende Wertschätzung erfährt, war als einer der ersten Abstrakten einer der wichtigen Avantgardekünstler seiner Zeit. Ab 1913 in Brandenburg an der Havel ansässig, hielt er sich regelmäßig in Berlin auf, wo er zu den Künstlern der Galerie "Der Sturm" gehörte und 1915 erstmals ausstellte. 1918 gehörte er zu den Gründungsmitgliedern des Arbeitsrates für Kunst, in den 20er Jahren pendelte seine Kunst zwischen Abstraktion, Expressionismus und Neuer Sachlickeit. Accompanied by an expertise from Dr. Rainer Enders, Frankfurt (Oder), September 19, 2009. The work will be included with the number 18.Oe.24 in the revised edition of the catalogue raisonné. Dr. Enders describes the present work as "a study explicitly for Topp's great painting 'Verlassene Stadt' from 1918, (...)." Both works were created with wartime impressions from 1918 still fresh in the artist's mind, "as the situation of the German Reich intensified on most fronts, civil unrest increased, and a military defeat with dramatic repercussions seemed imminent (...) Clearly, the city is deserted; the windows of most houses are now gaping black holes. [...] In the upper left portion of the image, the city bursts into a flaming inferno, already engulfing a few buildings. (...) Bedrohte Stadt is a painting of unadulturated colors; mingled colors can hardly be found. The resulting contrasts between red, yellow, and blue produce an image of great tension. The masterful distribution of yellow and resulting light-dark contrasts elicit a sense of disquietude, as well as danger and demise. (Dr. R. Enders, 2009, translated from the German.)

The work will be included in the forthcoming revision of the catalogue raisonné under the number 18.Oe.32 Provenienz: Private collection Meseritz. Private collection (gift from the previous owner in 1976). Arnold Topp was born in Soest, Westphalia, in 1887. By 1904 he was already friends with the Soest artists Wilhelm Morgner and Eberhard Viegener. Topp first attended the Soest Teachers' Seminary and on graduation worked as a village schoolmaster. After attending the Royal Art School in Düsseldorf, Topp worked as a drawing master in Brandenburg on the Havel from 1913. From there the artist cultivated the ties he had previously forged with the Berlin gallery Der Sturm". He visited Berlin regularly and made friends with artists, including Bruno Taut and Georg Muche. Topp's first show was held at Der Sturm'in December 1915. That same year Topp was conscripted for military service. In 1918 Topp was a founder-member of the Work Council for Art.Our picture dates from Topp's most productive phase, when he was at the height of his creative powers. The painter has largely overcome the war trauma and has abandoned war pictures" for other subject matter. The red walker motif recurs frequently at this time. Our picture features two figures who are interwoven with the ciphers of houses and pieces of landscape in the fabric of both composition and palette to fuse with the natural environment. Despite the vibrancy of the palette and the dynamic handling of form, our picture radiates the harmony and peace of an all-enveloping nature at one with mankind.Until 1929, Arnold Topp showed his works at numerous exhibitions in Germany, the US, the Soviet Union, Japan and France. During the National Socialist era, he was proscribed and works by him were included in the notorious exhibition of Degenerate Art". In 1945 he was conscripted despite his age into the last-ditch effort made by the National Socialist regime before being transferred to the Wehrmacht. He was reported missing in action from that time on. In April 1961, Arnold Topp was declared dead by the Soest District Court. [KD] In good condition.
