              Intriguing and extensive archive containing: 1) The typoscript of the storyboard texts of the Tom Poes stories that were written by Toonder and drawn by Julsing between strip no. 5945 and 7147. Detailed text and explanation about the plates to be drawn, sent by Toonder to Julsing between 1966 and 1970. Many sheets with typed or handwritten comments by Toonder, often on small alterations or special time wize requests. (some accompanied by small drawn figures at verso or in the margin); 2) Nine handwritten letters by Toonder to Julsing, two typed letters by Toonder, a (resignation) letter by Julsing to Toonder and 4 hand-drawn sketch sheets by Julsing. *During the 1960s Fred Julsing emerged as one of the great cartoonists in the Toonder group, drawing a staggering number of drawings and comic strips as one of the ghost writers for Toonder, including the popular Tom Poes comics in the Donald Duck Weekly. This correspondence gives insight in the relationship between Julsing and Toonder. From the earliest letter in this archive, the relation appears to be a complicated and frustrated one. "Je eerste brief kwam enigszins ongelegen (..) Het ongelegene zat er meer in dat ik op het moment van ontvangst juist een zorgelijke serie achter de rug had (...) De oude garage, die meer op een modern hotel leek en die elke oude-garage-sfeer miste (er lagen niet eens kapotte autobanden op de binnenplaats; laat staan auto onderdelen met paperclips) het gebrek aan constructie en acteren in de figuren, de hoge horizonten", continuing with "Verschoon mij. Het is niet mijn bedoeling om je te deprimeren, slechts om uiting te geven aan mijn stemming toen ik je brief kreeg" and in the same letter "Neem van me aan dat ik eerlijk verheugd ben over de grote vooruitgang die je werk vertoont. Ik voel me er zelfs trots op; want je weet dat ik in je talent op dit gebied geloof" (Toonder to Julsing). Most interesting is the copy of Julsing's letter of resignation to Toonder and Toonder's response to Julsing. "Want vergt Tom Poes, gerekend naar mijn normen, een beperkte produktietijd, de spanningen die ontstaan wanneer ik mij heb om te schakelen van mijn stijl en opvattingen naar, laten we zeggen, de uwe zijn vrij ernstig en nemen iedere week nog in omvang toe (...) ik heb kunnen konstateren dat mijn aandeel in de totstandkoming van de T.P.'-s beperkt blijft (...) Figuren en entourages hebben vrijwel overal grote veranderingen ondergaan. (...) Het feit, dat ik zoveel werk voor niets doe komt me wat wrang aan". The answer by Toonder being "Je mededeling kwam echter niet als een schok. Aan het werk was de laatste tijd te zien, dat de echte vreugde er aan ontbrak. En de onnauwkeurigheden bij het vertellen van het verhaal (meestal door het onoplettend lezen van de gegevens) hebben me vaak voor moeilijkheden geplaatst" (..) "Zou je het kunnen opbrengen om toch nog even enige discipline in de verzendingen te handhaven? Ik zal een zo groot mogelijke voorsprong nodig hebben."

              Copy(!) of an original strip Ollie B. Bommel and Tom Poes. Tom Puss, Captain Wal Rus and Wammes Waggel. Strip 625, 1943. Consisting of 3 plates in India ink with blue spot colour. Signed 'Marten Toonder' in the first plate. This copy was most likely not drawn (or signed) by Toonder but by one of the cartoonists in the studios. 11 x 26 cm. *From the collection of Miepie van Baarle-Neuhaus and Nic van Baarle. **Although signed Marten Toonder strips were possibly created by or in cooperation with one of the other cartoonists at the Studios. *** Tom Puss strips from this period are extremely hard to find; the copies that did survive time have been archived. In increasingly rare cases like here strips or rejected versions of a strip are discovered at the legacy of an employee of the studios. This strip being a copy of the original that was used for publishing, and which is archived in the Literature Museum in the Hague.

Sir Oliver and Tom Puss walk towards the lake while holding an umbrella. 28 x 21.5 cm. Iconic drawing from one of the finest picture books from Toonder's heyday. Colours well preserved, signature Toonder bottom right, stamped "Marten Toonder Studio's Reguliersdwarsstr. 9, Amsterdam-C Telefoon 35867" and "Please, return the Original drawings as soon as possible in undamaged condition" on reverse. Of the watercolours from the book a handful of copies are known. This hitherto undiscovered copy was purchased privately decaded ago and for years decorated a child's bedroom.

Naturally, strip 3742 was chosen for this unique print. Heer Ollie geraakte geheel in paniek. 'Mijn kast!' jammerde hij. 'Alle mooie, oude dingen zijn vergaan, mijn antieke woning is verbrand en het laatste dat mij nog restte, was de kast (...). Onder luid gekraak en geknetter viel het bejaarde kabinet uit elkaar -en te midden van dichte rookwolken trad er een figuur uit te voorschijn. (...). 'Mieters' sprak hij, op de resten van heer Ollies vertrek wijzend. 'Oude rommel voor de sloop! Lekkere afbraak!
