Jan van Tongeren was a Dutch painter and graphic artist renowned for his serene landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes. Throughout his career, van Tongeren's art was influenced by the Dutch realist tradition, earning him comparisons to artists of the Hague School and earlier Dutch masters. Étiquette au dos : Exposition Taxatie Dimensions : 65 x 75 cm Provenance : - Galerie Cheque - Galerie SIAU, Amsterdam 1972/5 ; - Collection privée Monte-Carlo, acquise auprès du précédent en mai 1972 Avec la copie de la facture d'achat. Important artiste dans l'histoire de l'art néerlandais de son époque, né à Oldebroek, Jan Van Tongeren commence à peindre dès son plus jeune âge et se forme ensuite à l'Ecole Normale Nationale de Dessin à Amsterdam. Il se concentre essentiellement à peindre à l'huile des natures mortes avec un sens aigu du détail et accordant une grande attention à la lumière et les couleurs. Son oeuvre est considérée comme faisant partie du nouveau réalisme ou réalisme magique, mouvement auquel appartiennent aussi Dick Ket et Raoul Hynckes. C'est la manière très réaliste avec laquelle il représente les matériaux qui caractérise ses compositions, comme des poteries, des couvertures de livre ou le pissé d'un tissu. Pour Van Tongeren, l'essence d'une telle nature morte réside dans le placement des objets les uns par rapport aux autres et dans les espaces laissés entre eux, ce qui laisse à penser qu'il peut passer des journées entières à les disposer dans une composition équilibrée. Son travail jouera un rôle important dans le développement de la peinture hollandaise et son style inflencera de nombreux artistes après lui. Oeuvres conservées au Rijksmuseum d'Amsterdam.
