            A SET OF TEN PLASTER CAST MEDALLION PLAQUES after Count Theodore Petrovich Tolstoy, 1783-1873. The ten octagonal shape polychrome relief sculpted plaques with various allegorical scenes commemorating the campaigns against Napoleon and contained in matching glazed gilt frames. Width 8 inches (20.3 cm) each. Count Feodor Petrovich Tolstoy (1783-1873) was born in St. Petersburg where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1802. As one of the most fashionable artists in Russia during the 1820's, he was mentioned by Pushkin in Eugene Onegin. However, his greatest talent was in wax modeling and from 1810 he was appointed medical designer to the St. Petersburg Mint. Between 1813 and 1833 Tolstoy created his most successful medallions, a series of classical scenes devoted to the Napoleonic Wars of 1812-1814, including the present examples. He was appointed vice-president of the St. Petersburg Academy in 1828.

            A SET OF TEN PLASTER MEDALLIONS DEPICTING VARIOUS BATTLES AND HISTORICAL FIGURES, BY COUNT FEODOR PETROVICH TOLSTOY (1783-1873) VARIOUSLY SIGNED AND DATED 1812-1815 each within giltwood octagonal glazed frames. Together with another medallion of Alexander I by Tolstoy within silvered wood octagonal frame. CATALOGUE NOTE Tolstoy was born in St. Petersburg and entered the Naval Corps where his artistic potential became apparent. He studied sculpture under Professor Prokofiev, and the artist Kiprensky gave guidance in his drawings of plaster casts from antique models. His first bas reliefs based on classical scenes were done in 1806, and in 1810 he was appointed as a designer of medals for the St. Petersburg Mint. He was known for his series of medallions including one commemorating the campaign against Napoleon. In the largest relief, of Alexander I, he is depicted as a Tenth century warrior Rodomysl. The inscription states 'Rodomysl of the 19th century'. The decisive battle of Leipzig is represented around the sheild by the rescue of a female figure who, seated upon a firm pedestal, is symbolic of social order.
