CATALOGUE NOTE

Tolstoy was born in St. Petersburg and entered the Naval Corps where his artistic potential became apparent. He studied sculpture under Professor Prokofiev, and the artist Kiprensky gave guidance in his drawings of plaster casts from antique models. His first bas reliefs based on classical scenes were done in 1806, and in 1810 he was appointed as a designer of medals for the St. Petersburg Mint. He was known for his series of medallions including one commemorating the campaign against Napoleon.

In the largest relief, of Alexander I, he is depicted as a Tenth century warrior Rodomysl. The inscription states 'Rodomysl of the 19th century'. The decisive battle of Leipzig is represented around the sheild by the rescue of a female figure who, seated upon a firm pedestal, is symbolic of social order.
