Titled "Cairo" 1888, signed and dated framed watercolor. Born in Kolding, Denmark, Toft was educated in his native land. At age 16 he began his travels aboard a whaler and in 1849 sailed into San Francisco Bay aboard the ship Ohio. After unsuccessfully panning for gold around the Trinity River, he returned to San Francisco where he contributed illustrations to Harper's. While in California, he made many painting excursions to Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. He signed his works in various ways: Tofft, Tufts, Toffts, Toft, and with his monogram, the letter T with a circle drawn around its stem. In 1870 he settled in London where he remained until his death. His watercolors are rare and historically important. Overall size: 24 1/2 x 20 in. Size: 15 x 10 1/2 in. 19th Century Landscape Watercolor Painting by the well listed and accomplished Danish American artist Peter Peterson Toft (Danish/American 1825-1901) Entitled “Eltz Castle” | Watercolor on Board | Painted in 1888 | Signed, Titled and Dated by the artist in the lower left of image | Housed in a beautiful antique gold gilt frame | Dimensions: 44″ W x 36″ H | The Eltz Castle (German: Burg Eltz) is a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier, Germany. It is still owned by a branch of the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations ago. Bürresheim Castle (Schloss Bürresheim), Eltz Castle and Lissingen Castle are the only castles on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate which have never been destroyed. The castle is surrounded on three sides by the Elzbach River, a tributary on the north side of the Moselle. It is on a 70-metre (230 ft) rock spur, on an important Roman trade route between rich farmlands and their markets. The Eltz Forest has been declared a nature reserve by Flora-Fauna-Habitat and Natura 2000. Peter Peterson Toft (Danish/American 1825-1901) was born in Denmark, and later lived in California, England, and Copenhagen. Toft died in England in 1901. Toft was a prominent Painter (primarily watercolor) and Illustrator who studied art in Denmark. Peter Toft arrived in San Francisco in 1850 by ship. He made many painting excursions into Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. He also served as an illustrator for Harper’s Magazine in 1867. His work is diplayed at numerous galleries and museums including the Oakland Museum; Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley; Montana Historical Society, and has been sold at many of the largest auction houses in the world, including Christies', Sotheby's and Bonhams.
