      Nov. 16, 2024

      Stefano Tofanelli, Samson and Dalila

      Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Inscribed on the back of the frame: Quadro di SteStefano (sic!) Tofanelli Pittor Lucchese Fatto in Roma l'anno 1793. Stefano Tofanelli initially trained in Lucca with Giuseppe Antonio Luchi. There, he met his fellow painter Bernardino Nocchi, with whom he formed a lifelong lasting friendship. In 1769, both artists moved to Rome, where they were both accepted in the workshop of the Pittore dei Sacri Palazzi Apostolici, Nicola Lapiccola, who became a pivotal figure in Tofanelli´s career. Back in Lucca at the beginning of the 19th century, he was appointed by Napoleon in 1805 Senator of the principality of Lucca, later becoming the court painter of Elisa Baciocchi Bonaparte. Thanks to his excellent drawing skills, Tofanelli became very much sought-after in the field of engraving, also gaining a fame as a portrait painter. His style, characterized by clarity and a refined formality, allowed him to masterfully combine the two aesthetic canons par excellence of Neoclassicism: Raphael and the Antique.

Above the scene is the magnificent chariot of Apollo with the circle of the Sun, which symbolizes the constant movement of the Universe. etching 65 x 56,5 cm Good general condition with restorations and lacks on the edges.
