      C. TISCHBEIN (*1797), The funeral of the knight, 1817, Pencil

      Est: €5,700 - €7,600

Carl Wilhelm Tischbein (1797 Dessau - 1855 Bückeburg): The funeral of the knight, 1817, Pencil Technique: Pencil and Watercolor on Watermark: Partially visible. Letters/Digits - two letters - CS - Date: 19th century Inscription: Lower right monogrammed (ligated): "CWT". Lower right dated: "Roma. 1817". Date: 1817 Description: Two fingers still lie on the blade of his sword, struck down perhaps by a very similar weapon in a fight to the death. Next to the laid out corpse, the young widow with her infant, who must now grow up fatherless, is comforted by a venerable knight with a thick beard. Do we see here a family in mourning for their fallen husband and son? Clad in splendid armour and courtly fashion, the figures in the setting of a Gothic church could have come from a play. And indeed, a small coat of arms on the pillar of the church could be read as a clue to the background of the creation. Cautiously, the coat of arms of Württemberg leads us to speculate about a connection to the drama Götz von Berlichingen, which premiered in 1774. The still young Johann Wolfgang Goethe had written the drama based on the autobiographical writing of the Swabian imperial knight Gottfried von Berlichingen and subsequently inspired a large number of chivalric novels in the German-speaking world. His historically quite accurate view of the late Middle Ages contains a preoccupation with the end of chivalry and thematises not only the confrontation with the 'troop genre' of the lance-bearing horseman, which had been overtaken by new war technology, but also the exercise of a sovereign's rights vis-à-vis his subordinate estates. With a transfigured view of the Middle Ages, the time of heroes and knights became a recurring theme in the Romantic period that shaped the literature and art of the 19th century.Carl Wilhelm Tischbein's drawing wants to tell us about chivalry and bravery, death and mourning, affection and loyalty. And indeed, we see less the image conveyed from Goethe's drama, in which this scene is specifically not to be found, than that of the Romantic recipients. While Goethe reports of loves and intrigues entirely in the style of William Shakespeare, inventing a complex narrative based on historical lore, Tischbein's drawing heroises. The emotional culmination of the drawing lies in the compassionate gaze of the bearded knight - one even wants to assume the title hero Goetz himself, who wants to comfort his sister Maria over the death of the poisoned Adelbert von Weislingen - as well as the touching of the hands of the sleeping infant and the knight. In the face of the lost beloved, the whole story is told here. It would be too free an interpretation to identify other figures from Goethe's drama in the conspiratorial glances of the gentlemen in the background or the stare of the noble lady in the centre, which figuratively divides the figures. With the date "Roma 1817", the drawing can be assigned to the circle of the German-Romans of the early 19th century. The group of Nazarenes in Rome had already successfully called the Christian Middle Ages into the modern visual world with their religious art. The date 1817 also doubles with an event that can be woven into the burgeoning romance of chivalry. In the same year, Friedrich Rückert published his poem Der alte Barbarossa (Old Barbarossa) and turned the historical Emperor Frederick I of the Holy Roman Empire into the national figure of the 19th century, which has survived in our visual memory to this day.Shortly after the poem appeared, Barbarossa was depicted by artists as a proud, bearded knight, and it was not until Karl Friedrich Lessing's almost iconic portrait of 1840 that he strikingly resembled the warrior shown here. The emperor from the House of dIf we wanted to see the red-bearded ruler in the drawing, however, we would have to research the fate of eleven surviving descendants, including legends. However, if we wanted to see the red-bearded ruler in the drawing, we would have to research the fates of eleven surviving descendants, including legends, in order to decipher the scene shown here. Without wanting to interpret the figures conclusively, it can be stated in any case that the depiction corresponds to the zeitgeist of chivalric romanticism of the early 19th century. Perhaps remembering Goethe's lines in the aftermath, perhaps thinking of the emperor who had been elevated to the status of a national heroic figure of the homeland, Carl Wilhelm Tischbein drew this sensitively harmonised picture of a transfigured Middle Ages in Rome and, not least, tells his own story of chivalric virtues. As a descendant of Johann Friedrich August Tischbein, the 'Leipzig Tischbein', Carl Wilhelm belonged to the third generation of the Tischbein family of artists, who, like the Strack side line that had existed since the middle of the 18th century, distinguished themselves above all as court painters in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the County of Schaumburg-Lippe. Carl Wilhelm Tischbein

      Est: €2,800 - €5,600

R. u. Ligatur-Monogr. mit Dat. 1841. Ca. 39 cm x 35 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas, laid down on cardboard. Signed with monogram and dated 1841.

Monogrammed and dated lower left: CWT (ligatured) 18(..) Carl Wilhelm Tischbein was first taught to paint by his father Friedrich Tischbein (1750-1812), the so-called "Leipziger Tischbein", and following his father's death by Ferdinand Hartmann in Dresden, where he made acquaintance with Anton Graff. Following stays in Rome (1816-1818), Bonn, Leipzig, Frankfurt and Brussels, he became court painter in Bückeburg under Duke Georg Wilhelm von Schaumburg-Lippe in 1829 as the successor of Wilhelm Strack.
