Harry Jones Thaddeus (1860-1929) RHA A Sheep Pen

      Est: €6,000 - €9,000

Harry Jones Thaddeus (1860-1929) RHA A Sheep Pen oil on board signed ''H.J. THADDEUS'' and dated 1894 lower left of centre h:63.50  w:76.50 cm. Provenance: Gorry Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection Though the tone and style of this painting was informed by French rustic naturalism, its subject is more likely to be English. Thaddeus travelled extensively throughout his career, but from the mid-1880s to 1904 was based in London and conducted much of his business in its vicinity. The character and russet tiles of the farm building on the right of the picture are certainly consistent with southern English vernacular architecture. The calm simplicity of the subject - farm workers discussing stock - provides a gentle contrast to the agrarian subjects for which Thaddeus is better known. His most celebrated works include depictions of peasants in moments of heightened emotion or peril (The Wounded Poacher (1880/1, NGI); An Irish Eviction, Co. Galway (1890, private collection; The Poachers (1890''s, private collection)). Animals are extremely unusual in Thaddeus''s work. However, on the evidence of this painting, and a portrait of the artist''s son Freddie with the family dog (c.1904, private collection), a tender and intimate record never intended for public scrutiny, Thaddeus was both comfortable and competent in painting such subject matter. This picture invites comparison with the work of Joseph Malachy Kavanagh (1856-1918), who specialised in pastoral subjects and, like his compatriot and close contemporary Thaddeus, had spent time painting in Brittany in the early 1880''s. Its peculiarities notwithstanding, the painting bears many of the technical hallmarks of the artist''s work. The palette, particularly the distinctive greens, and the orange-brown of the farm building''s roof, recur throughout Thaddeus''s oeuvre. The liberal use of dark outlines around the linear detail, meanwhile, is also characteristic of Thaddeus''s paintings in many genres, as is the assuredness of the drawing. For several decades, Thaddeus enjoyed considerable success and critical acclaim as a society portrait painter, befriending and serving many members of Europe''s royal, aristocratic and political elite. Alternative subjects, like this example, provided him with welcome respite from the exacting demands of formal portraiture, and he displayed on many occasions an inclination to experiment. In this instance, the composition is relatively unorthodox - the horizontal and dramatically foreshortened sheep pen occupies most of the middle ground - and does not adhere to strict academic models. The picture is also larger than one might expect for such an understated subject. The summary description of the foreground and background detail suggest that the painting is unfinished. However, the tonal balance of the work and the rendering of the elements in the middle ground (and an old cart on the left) indicate that the painting is at least very close to its final state. With Kindest Regards from the Painter 1904'Provenance: Important Irish Art Sale, these rooms, 26 March 2013, Lot No.97 where purchased by present ownerMajor General Charles Francis Roe (1838-1922), was an American soldier of some note. Having entered West Point in 1864, he played a key role as an officer in the campaign against the Sioux and their allies along the Yellowstone in 1876. He was, as 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Cavalry, among the first to encounter the battlefield after the Battle of Little Big Horn, writing a gruesome description of what he found there. From 1898 to 1912, he commanded the National Guard in New York State.Thaddeus encountered Roe in 1904, shortly after his arrival in New York City, where he took a studio on W. 33rd Street and maintained a presence until late 1906. In 1904, he appears to have confined his travels in the United States to between New York State and Washington DC, so the riverscape is most likely to represent a place in that area. This is certainly consistent with the terrain described. Roe sat in uniform for Thaddeus the same year, and the resulting formal portrait remained in Roe's family in Pound Ridge, NY until the family home was sold in 1978. On more than one occasion, Thaddeus offered complimentary works to his sitters, both as a gesture of good will and in an attempt to secure further commissions. The riverscape may, therefore, coincide very closely with the portrait. Thaddeus considered Roe significant enough among his sitters to illustrate his portrait of him in his Recollections of a Court Painter, published in London in 1912, when Thaddeus was still living in the USA.Our grateful thanks to Dr Brendan Rooney who provided us with the information to compile this catalogue entry.

Henry Jones Thaddeus (1859 - 1929) A Study Oil and wax crayon on canvas, 71 x 58.5cm (28 x 23") Signed and inscribed 'Florence' and dated 1891 Provenance: By family descent, Chichester, Sussex This may be a study of Princess Mary, painted perhaps from memory with the aid of sketches made at an earlier date. Within her family, Princess Victoria Mary was affectionately known as Princess May, due to the fact that her birthday was in May. This name spread to the general public and lasted until her marriage to the Duke of York in 1893. Princess Mary was a cousin of Queen Victoria and spent her childhood between Richmond Park and Kensington Palace. Although cousins, an age difference is demonstrated by the fact that the Princess referred to Victoria as Aunt Queen and occasionally Grandmamma. She was a daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Teck, part of the Royal household. However, due to extreme extravagance on the part of the Duchess, the family was banished from Richmond and took up residence in Florence in the spring of 1883. Another new arrival in Florence at about the same time was the Irish artist, Henry Jones Thaddeus. According to Brendan Rooney, ('Thaddeus', Dublin, 2003) Thaddeus was introduced to the Duke in the autumn of that year and a great friendship was formed, thereby giving Thaddeus complete entrée to his family. Portraits of the Duke and the Duchess were commissioned and these appeared at the Royal Academy, London, in 1884. In the following year, he painted a formal portrait of Princess May and when the Tecks went to Switzerland, he was also invited, and at Bodensee, he painted a second portrait of the Princess. Both paintings remain untraced although one of them was exhibited at the Irish Exhibition, Olympia, 1888, number 74. Many sketches were executed for these portraits and it may be that these served as an aide memoir for the present work. James Pope-Hennessy, ('Queen Mary', London, 1959) draws a comparison between the formal portraits of the Princess and those earlier studies for which she sat for fun as Thaddeus developed his skills. The Princess herself was a student of art in Florence and 'Thady', as he was known, helped her with her work. Both the Tecks and Thaddeus left Florence in 1885 and went to London where, once again, Thaddeus joined them. However, the Tecks never visited Florence again. Thaddeus returned to Italy on many occasions, developing a wanderlust, which brought him all over the world. He remained in contact with the Tecks and met the Duke on many occasions including the Olympia exhibition in 1888 and when he attended the funeral of Fr. James Healy in Wicklow in 1894. Thaddeus sent the Princess a painting, The Origin of the Harp of Elfin, on the occasion of her marriage to the Duke of York in 1893. She later became Princess of Wales and Queen Mary on the Coronation of George V. Comparing photographs of the Princess between the age of five and twenty-five, a number of strong facial features are apparent. Apart from a general likeness, perhaps the most distinguishable of these features are the set of the nose, chin, eyes and forehead. The shape of the ear and bushy dark hair are also particularly noteworthy. The painting is also interesting from the point of view of Thaddeus's technique, especially in the lower section, which he left unresolved. However, the fact that he signed and inscribed it suggests that he was satisfied with his achievement. The drawing in blue wax crayon, which gives the effect of pencil, is particularly interesting, especially as it was applied over the oil paint. Thaddeus cleared his studio in March 1891 and left Florence for good. He must have harboured memories of his arrival there and perhaps painted the present study in memory of those early, carefree days. Although Thaddeus fostered a career as a leading society painter, his association with the Tecks failed to gain him Royal commissions and his career slowly dwindled. He eventually moved to America and later settled in the Isle of Wight, a forgotten man. Dominic Milmo-Penny, November 2010

Henry Jones Thaddeus (Irish, 1860-1929) A portrait of the Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia, aged four, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1886 left centre, with the Romanov arms upper right, the canvas 97 x 66 cm (38 x 26 in), in a gilt gesso rococo frame. Note: An old label on the stretcher identifies the subject as Grand Duchess Olga, younger daughter of Tsar Alexander III and sister of Tsar Nicholas II. In fact, the subject is Elena, the daughter of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, Alexander III's younger brother, and therefore Nicholas II's first cousin. Born in 1882, she married Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and died in 1957. Thaddeus painted her at her father's house in Cannes and his memoirs record her as being 'a bright-eyed, fascinating child, but rebellious and hot-tempered'. He recounts how one day during the sitting she 'pouted the whole time', before attacking her nanny and then Thaddeus himself with a paper-knife.
