Seventeen (17) Japanese works on paper. 1st-9th items: Collection of nine (9) Calligraphy items, including a 14 1/2" x 2" strip of calligraphy on gilt-edged cardstock attributed to Tomioka Tessai, also known as Hyakuren (Japanese, 1837-1924), one of the first major artists of the Nihonga style. The other eight (8) calligraphy samples, on cardstock and handmade paper, are unattributed. 10th-17th items: Grouping of eight (8) 20th century woodblock prints, including one (1) Utagawa Hiroshige also Ando Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858) woodblock print titled "(Shimada, Oigawa Sungan) Shimada: The Suruga Side of the Oi River," Number 24 from the artist's The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road series. It features an inscription, signature and seal by the artist and is mounted in the maru hyoso style using a turquoise to celadon green donsu (non-gold) brocade silk with cloud patterns. Many Nanga to Bunjin (literati) artists have painted landscapes in the style known as 'beihou', where the tip of the brush is used to paint dots on the paper to show a forested mountain. This type of landscape is thought to have originated with the literati artists during the Song dynasty (960-1279) in China, with many examples being passed on to Japan in the 15th century. By the 17th up to the 19th century, the literati movement gained popularity and many artists began to develop their own unique styles of literati landscapes. This particular work is believed to have been painted when Tessai was about 30 years old (compared with examples from various exhibition catalogues). The landscape appears to show how a literati or hermit yearns to live in the mountains, away from other other humans, and enjoy nature. The inscription by Tessai states how the water and the mountains seem far in the distance. The scroll comes with a box that was inscribed by FUKAYA Kingaku (1849 -1924?) during the winter of 1916. FUKAYA Kingaku was known for his connections with many artists in Kyoto during the Meiji period and was a personal friend of TOMIOKA Tessai. The interesting point of the box inscription is that Kingaku, instead of using the normal characters used to describe an authentication or valuation of a piece, used a character to signify his affinity or attachment to the piece, which might suggest that the painting had been part of Kingaku's collection. Condition: The scroll painting is in good condition with light wear, including minor staining as well as slight creases in the central to lower area. The dimensions are 137 x 29.4 cm (length x width). Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. It features an inscription, signature and seal by the artist and is mounted in the maru hyoso style using a turquoise to celadon green donsu (non-gold) brocade silk with cloud patterns. Many Nanga to Bunjin (literati) artists have painted landscapes in the style known as 'beihou', where the tip of the brush is used to paint dots on the paper to show a forested mountain. This type of landscape is thought to have originated with the literati artists during the Song dynasty (960-1279) in China, with many examples being passed on to Japan in the 15th century. By the 17th up to the 19th century, the literati movement gained popularity and many artists began to develop their own unique styles of literati landscapes. This particular work is believed to have been painted when Tessai was about 30 years old (compared with examples from various exhibition catalogues). The landscape appears to show how a literati or hermit yearns to live in the mountains, away from other other humans, and enjoy nature. The inscription by Tessai states how the water and the mountains seem far in the distance. The scroll comes with a box that was inscribed by FUKAYA Kingaku (1849 -1924?) during the winter of 1916. FUKAYA Kingaku was known for his connections with many artists in Kyoto during the Meiji period and was a personal friend of TOMIOKA Tessai. The interesting point of the box inscription is that Kingaku, instead of using the normal characters used to describe an authentication or valuation of a piece, used a character to signify his affinity or attachment to the piece, which might suggest that the painting had been part of Kingaku's collection. Condition: The scroll painting is in good condition with light wear, including minor staining as well as slight creases in the central to lower area. Signed Tessai Gaishi 鉄斎外史 with two red seals, good brocade mounting, wooden scrolls and box From a German collection. Bodai Daruma (im Sanskrit Bodhidharma), kurz Daruma 達磨 genannt, ist der in Japan populärste buddhistische Patriarch überhaupt und ist der Begründer des Zen-Buddhismus. Daruma - aus indischem Königshaus - soll im frühen 6. Jh. (der Überlieferung nach) nach China gefahren sein und dort den Chan-Buddhismus begründet haben. Das Bildnis zeigt die beliebteste Darstellung des Daruma - in Meditation sitzend, Jahre soll er so verbracht haben, es wurde ein Symbol des Zen, die Künstler aber spielen sich gerne mit dem Ausdruck im Gesicht. Beharrliches Durchhalten, aber vielleicht auch ein wenig Zweifel. Die Gesichtszüge sind unbewegt, dafür ist der Faltenwurf im Gewand mit kräftigen Strichen gemalt. Die Ohrringe sind für Daruna typisch, aber auch ein wenig Hotei spielt hinein, der Schmerbauch nämlich ... Tessai war Maler und Kalligraph aus Kyoto. Das Bild ist Tessai Gaishi 鉄斎外史 signiert, darunter zwei rote Siegel. Gute Brokatmontierung, hölzerne Roller, in Holzkassette.
