          RICHARD TAYLOR (1902-1970) "The Messenger." Illustration for an unknown project. Watercolor and ink on illustration board. 420x670 mm; 16 1/2x26 1/2 inches, image, on 20x30-inch board. Signed "Richard Taylor 1945" and titled in lower center image. While Taylor is best known for his droll New Yorker cartoons, he was a master of science fiction and fantasy illustration. Most of that work appeared on the covers of Arkham House novels in the 1950s and 60s, though his archives have presented numerous examples of such dark, Hieronymus Bosch-like landscapes and creatures as this wonderful illustration.

Signed in ink upper right, Published in the October 22, 1949 issue. The New Yorker Magazine stamps and printers' marks on verso. Second captioned 'Keep perfectly still, Henderson. I've seen this very situation handled several times in the cinema." A version of the image used in the May 25, 1940 issue. Unsigned. Both with some average soiling, but images clean.
