KANO TANYU (1602 - 1674): AUTUMN WIND OVER THE XIANG RIVER

    Est: €1,800 - €3,600

Ink painting on silk. Japan, around 1640The Xiang and Xiao are two rivers in the Chinese province Hunan. They were in Japan from the Ashikaga Period (14th cent.) a popular theme for romantic ideal landscapes, famous for their beauty. But also to demonstrate virtuoso mastership in handling brush and ink, as this painting clearly confirms – airy and confidently placed strokes conjure up an enchanted landscape. Partly shrouded in fog, high mountains emerge, a distant pagoda, left a temple building, cliffs, a fisher on the river, migrating birds fluttering above him. Signature TAN-YU SAI hitsu 探 幽 斎 筆 and seal Hogen (title) TAN-YU 法 眼 探 幽. Tanyu was an official and successful painter of the Tokugawa Shogunate, he decorated palaces (imperial, too), temples and portrayed, among others, the famous Shogun Ieyasu many times. Later he received the highest possible title of Hoin. Older scroll mounted with original material in good condition. Includes an old wooden case with inscription “Autumn Wind over the Xiang – painted by Tanyu Sai“. Mounting using old silk brocade, ivory rollers.PICTURE 88 x 34,7 CM, SCROLL 173 x 47 CM From a German collection
