Item Overview

Description

KANO TANYU MORINOBU (1602 - 1674): JUROJIN. Ink on silk. Brocade mounting with ivory Jikusaki. Japan, Kakemono, about 1640. PICTURE SIZE 97 x 39 CM, SCROLL LENGTH 180 CM
The Jurojin in this scroll was painted around the same time as the „Cutting Bamboo" scroll in the Metropolitan Collection N.Y. and shows us the same eloquence of the brushwork. It is a marvellous example of the high quality of the Kano painters, which especially Tanyu achieved in the field of Zen painting, as well as the other more private style of this highly honoured official painter of the Shogun court. Signature: TANYU SAI hitsu ???? Seal: Hogen* TANYU ???? Comes with a box bearing the inscription „Tanyu Sai Jurojin"
