Adamo Tadolini trained under Giacomo de Maria at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where he made his name making fine versions of famous Greco-Roman sculptures. In 1814 he travelled to Rome and made such an impression on the great Venetian sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822) that he was invited to work in the master's studio. It is thought that he met Count Nikolai Demidov in 1823, while staying at the Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome. This bust was probably carved a few years later in around 1827. Demidov one of the richest men in Russia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He and his family had made their fortune excavating minerals and mining raw materials. In 1824 he was appointed Ambassador to the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence and bought a villa formerly owned by the Medici family in Pratolino. He embarked on projects of social improvement, building a school, a hospital and an orphanage in the nearby town of San Nicola. In gratitude for this philanthropy, the people of Florence dedicated the 'Piazza Demidov' to him.

Natif de Bologne et formé à l'académie de cette même ville, Adamo Tadolini s'imprègne dès sa formation de l'art néoclassique auprès du sculpteur Giacomo de Maria et surtout de Canova dont il est l'un des plus proches collaborateurs. Réputé pour son habileté technique et sa grande connaissance de l'anatomie, Tadolini est considéré comme l'un des continuateurs les plus fidèles du style de Canova. S'il a travaillé sur des oeuvres du maitre aussi fameuses que le Monument à Georges Washington ou le Monument équestre de Charles III de Bourbon, il s'est aussi distingué pour ses oeuvres personnelles, commandes officielles et portraits privés. En 1817 il ouvre son propre atelier dans lequel vont se succéder plusieurs membres de sa famille. Adamo Tadolini répond tout autant à des commandes princières qu'à la forte demande de collectionneurs européens friands d'oeuvres inspirées de l'antique. Son atelier se spécialise dans la production de sujets mythologiques ou de copies d'oeuvres classiques ou néo-classiques. Compte-tenu de la datation tardive de ce Bacchus portant corbeille de raisins et aiguière (en 1867 l'artiste a 79 ans), il faut sans doute y voir une collaboration entre le maitre et un membre de l'atelier, sans doute son fils Scipion (1822-1892) qui fait ensuite perdurer le modèle, comme en témoigne une autre paire connue de marbres représentant Cérès et Bacchus datée de 1881. Celui-ci illustre avec un sens de la narration et du drame le martyre du jeune Pancrace de Rome, victime en 304 ap. J.-C à l'âge de 14 ans des persécutions menées par l'empereur Dioclétien contre les chrétiens. Refusant d'adorer les dieux romains, il est présenté devant l'empereur qui, souhaitant l'épargner du fait de sa haute naissance, l'exhorte de renoncer à sa " folie ". Le jeune homme de 14 ans lui répond avec courage et foi : " Bien que je sois enfant par le corps, je porte cependant en moi le cœur d'un vieillard, et grâce à la puissance de mon Seigneur Jésus-Christ, la terreur que tu nous inspires ne nous épouvante pas " (J. de Voragine, 'La Légende dorée'), avant d'être décapité. La basilique San Pancrazio est érigée en son honneur à Rome en 604. Estimation 20 000 - 30 000 €

Canova did several versions of Hebe and those were copied by studio assistants. One of his assistants was Adamo Tadolini. Included with the statue are two letters and a post card of the studio of Adamo's son, Enrico.

Büstenpaar des Sir Thomas Baring (1772-1848) und seiner Gattin Lady Mary Ursula Baring (1774-1846), in der Art römischer Kaiser mit Toga, auf profiliertem Rundsockel. H 80,5 bzw. 79 cm. Provenienz: - Galerie Heim, Paris. - Aus einer hochbedeutenden europäischen Privatsammlung. Sir Thomas Baring gehörte zur Londoner Bankdynastie 'Baring Brothers'. Die Jahre 1790 bis 1801 verbrachte er in der angesehenen East India Company. In Kalkutta heiratete er im Jahre 1794 Maria Ursula Sealy. Zurück in England bekleidete in den Jahren 1806 bis 1832 das Amt eines Abgeordneten des Parlaments der Wahlbezirke High Wycombe und Hampshire. Er war bestens bekannt für seinen erlesenen Kunstgeschmack und seine herausragende Gemäldesammlung. Adamo Tadolini war der Enkel des Bildhauers Petronio Tadolini (1727-1813). Er besuchte von 1808 bis 1813 die Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, geleitet von Giacomo De Maria (1762-1838). Als er 22 Jahre alt war, ernannte man ihn zum Professor der Anatomie und der Accademia di San Luca. 1813 gewann er mit einem Relief aus Terrakotta den von der Accademia verliehenen Curlandese-Preis. Das Relief stellte Venus dar, die Aeneas Waffen reicht. Im gleichen Jahr ging Tadolini mit einem vierjährigen Stipendium der Accademia nach Rom. Dort fertigte er eine Gipsstatue 'Ajax die Götter verfluchend' an. Mit dieser gewann er einen von Antonio Canova für junge Bildhauer ausgeschriebenen Preis und wurde darauf Assistent in Canovas Atelier. Er blieb dort bis 1822. Die Zusammenarbeit mit A. Canova ist in einem Schaffen unverkennbar. 1830 und 1858 stellte er in London aus. Im vormaligen Atelier Canovas und Tadolinis in Rom (Via del Babuino 150 A-B) befindet sich seit dem Jahr 2000 das Museo Atelier Canova Tadolini, in welchem von ihnen angefertigte Büsten in Marmor und Gips sowie Arbeitsgegenstände ausgestellt sind. Betreiber des Museums ist die Galleria Benucci. Nach Tadolinis Tod übernahm sein Sohn Scipione Tadolini (1822-1892) das Atelier. Sein Sohn Tito Tadolini (1828-1910) sowie die Nachfahren Scipiones, Giulio Tadolini (1849-1918) und Enrico Tadolini (1888-1967), waren ebenfalls Bildhauer. Lit.: T.F.
