(Brussels 1618–1664 Goa) A shepherd observing a woman feeding her child, oil on canvas, 66.5 x 50.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private European Collection We are grateful to Peter C. Sutton for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. We are also grateful to Laura Laureati for independently confirming the attribution of the present painting. The present painting relates to a similar work by Michael Sweerts sold in these rooms 25 October 2023, lot 93. This realistic composition is probably set in the courtyard of a farm. From the background a hunter, accompanied by some young men and a dog, points to the shepherd family in the right foreground, feeding their son; above, a woman looks out, curious, from the threshold of a house. The subjects of poverty and charity were familiar to the Flemish painter Michael Sweerts, who depicted the poor with piety, adding a sense of participation in their suffering, as shown by the diary entry of a missionary who met the painter in Amsterdam in 1661: ‘[Sweerts] fasted almost every day and divided his possessions among the poor’ (see G. Briganti, L. Trezzani, L. Laureati [eds.], I Bamboccianti, Rome 1983, p. 313). The present painting belongs to the artist’s Italian period and was painted during his stay in the second half of the 1640s. Indeed, there are notable stylistic, compositional and thematic analogies with other works made by Sweerts in Rome. Among these are The card players, now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-1958) and the Buona Ventura or Good Fortune, conserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nîmes (see M. Dolcetti, R. Kultzen (eds.), Michiel Michael Sweerts. Bruxelles 1618 – Goa 1664, Doornspijk 1996, p. 92, cat. no. 17). Michael Sweerts was born in Brussels in 1618 where he is registered as having been baptised in the church of Saint Nicholas. Little is known regarding his training as a painter. The first document for his biography dates to 1646 when he was registered in the parish of Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome, aged 28. This document also tells us that he shared his lodgings with another painter. Sweerts became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and Prince Camillo Pamphilj, the nephew of Pope Innocent X was amongst his patrons. He returned to the Low Countries in 1652 establishing himself in Brussels in 1656, where he founded a drawing school. In 1660 he spent a brief period in Amsterdam, subsequently he left for China as a Catholic missionary in 1662. He only reached Goa in 1664, where he stayed with the Jesuits and where he died that same year. Sweerts was a versatile artist, and his paintings reveal the influence of both the Northern and Southern European schools of painting. His compositions were frequently inspired by street scenes and daily life, such as is apparent in the present painting. The artist was also inspired by classical antiquity as "all’antica" architectural settings appear in some of his works, while in others he depicts plaster or marble statues.

Head of an Old Woman. In front of a neutral dark background, the painting shows the bowed head of an old woman, dressed in simple gray and white clothing and with a white cap on her head. He obviously comes from modest means, his cheeks are sunken, his mouth is toothless, his skin is wrinkled. But her gaze is up, the old woman seems to be responding to someone or listening to someone. The artist managed to create an intense expression on the face of an old woman. The decline of female beauty in old age fascinated artists, who repeatedly captured it in images combining genre and character studies. Dimensions 32.5 × 27 cm, Oil on wood

Michael Sweerts, A Young Artist drawing Beggars in a Landscape

          Est: €60,000 - €80,000

The documented facts about the biography of the painter Michael Sweerts are rather sparse: Born in Brussels in 1618, in 1646 his name appears in the parish registers of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. There we learn that he lived in the "Strada Margutta", where other Catholic artists from the north also lived. Sweerts had achieved quite considerable fame in Rome and could count on a circle of prominent patrons, first and foremost Prince Camillo Pamphili and the Dutch silk merchants Jean, Josef and Jeronimus Deutz. Despite this, he left the city again in the period between 1652 and 1654. In 1655 he is mentioned as having attended a baptism in Brussels, and in 1659 he is included among the artists in the city's Academy of Saint Luke. We also learn that he founded his own painting school in Brussels. Later, he joined a Catholic missionary organization, consisting of followers of Vincent de Paul, which was dedicated to conducting missionary work in the East. In 1661, Sweerts is documented in Amsterdam for a few months, where he supervised the construction of a ship in which the missionaries would set sail on their journey to the Far East. In December of the same year, we find him in Marseilles, from whence the ship left shortly after for Palestine. However, during the journey overland in Syria, Sweerts began to experience psychological issues, so that somewhere between Isfahan and Tabriz in Persia he was dismissed from the society and continued his journey alone. He eventually managed to arrive at the Jesuit sanctuary in Goa, where he is said to have died at the age of 46. As an artist, Michael Sweerts is associated with the so-called Bamboccianti, a group of Dutch painters in Rome who developed the genre of southern peasant scenes. However, he can hardly be referred to as a "Bambocciante tout-court", as his works display an intellectual and socio-philosophical sensitivity that elevates them from the status of mere genre paintings. Following his arrival in Rome, Michael Sweerts pursued the subject of "artists at work" with remarkable persistence. Between 1646 and 1652, he created four paintings of artists' studios and four others showing artists drawing outdoors. In Rome, Sweerts recognized that being an artist, or the artist's mission, involved intellectual reflection on one's own actions beyond the craft itself. In this sense, the present painting has been described by Laura Laureati as an emblematic example of Sweerts's early activity in Rome (op. cit.). Equally significantly, Lara Yaeger-Crasselt recognizes it in her study of Michael Sweert's role in artistic education in the Netherlands and Rome at this time (op. cit.). This artist's complete works consist of barely more than 50 paintings. The rank of this work within his overall oeuvre is evidenced by the many publications and the numerous exhibitions in which it has been described or shown.
