        Skeleton and Roses poster with gold border. Signed in gold by Stanley Mouse. The signature -Sullivan- is in the bottom right corner. Edmund Joseph Sullivan (1869-1933), was a British book illustrator who worked in a style which merged the British tradition of illustration from the 1860s with aspects of Art Nouveau. Later in his career, he illustrated the First Version of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam translated by Edward Fitzgerald, using images of skeletons and animated pots. Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley found this illustration in the book of poems at the library. Dimensions: 22- x 28- Estimated Value $100-300

Sotheby's, London, 27 October 1999, lot 1022 (sold for £800). Exhibited: Exposition Internationale de Arte Barcelona, 1927 (old label refers). Edmund Joseph Sullivan is best known for his illustrations for newspapers, magazines and books. His work may be found in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and elsewhere. The present painting is a modern interpretation of the Adoration, set in a Kent landscape, and was exhibited at the Exposition Internationale de Arte Barcelona. An image of a smiling skeleton with a crown of roses drawn by the artist for the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam was used by American rock band, The Grateful Dead, and became one of the most recognised icons of the band. The present painting was a decorative panel for Sullivan's The Angelus.
