Notes

E. J. Sullivan was one of the premier English illustrators of the 1890s and early twentieth century. "Perhaps," declared Walter Crane in Of the Decorative Illustration of Books Old and New (1905), "the most remarkable work in book illustration has been that of Mr. E. J. Sullivan, whose powerful designs ... are full of vigor." Among the many artists Sullivan profoundly influenced was Arthur Rackham. Sullivan intended to collect his anti-German World War I cartoons for the National News in a single volume as a follow-up to The Kaiser's Garland (1915), but the work was never issued.
