George Sugarman American, (1912-1999) Untitled, 1954 mixed media on paper signed and dated lower left. From the Archives of AskArt: Sculptor/painter George Sugarman's (1912-1999) early sculpture was abstract, in a Cubist mode. Wood was carved asymmetrically, suspended and extended horizontally, to express space. Later, the wood was painted in bright colors, in chaotic sequences, which were like three-dimensional equivalents of Abstract Expressionist paintings. The subsequent use of acrylics on metal in a full range of color "forms a bridge between painting and sculpture" and helps to "articulate the formal problems set in each sculpture." With a disregard for industrially available materials, he preferred to render complicated forms from the imagination in order to obtain a desired "particularity of statement." Sugarman was educated at City College of New York and Atelier Zadkine in Paris. He received a National Arts Council Award and Longview Foundation Grants. Among many exhibitions were the Whitney Museum of American Art Annual and the Los Angeles County Museum. His work is found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. George Sugarman (American, 1912-1999) abstract sculpture, "Red and Black Spiral," 1975, painted and welded aluminum, with four fan-fold sections encircling a horizontal axis. Sculpture is hollow and measures 69" H x 128" W x 44" D. Sculpture currently situated on a base which is available to the winning buyer, measuring 28 1/4"H x 49 3/4"W x 50"D. Provenance: Deaccessioned by the Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee, commissioned by the museum through a purchase from the National Endowment for the Arts. Note: This large and iconic sculpture, which was has welcomed visitors to the Hunter Museum since 1978, will only be available for preview from its current outdoor location at the entry to the Museum grounds. (No admission fee is required to view it). It will not be available for viewing or for pickup at Case's gallery. The buyer of this lot must make arrangements to pick up the sculpture from its current location at the Hunter Museum in Chattanooga. The hollow sculpture and its very heavy base can be separated and it is up to the buyer to decide if they want to take the base. Artist biography: George Sugarman was born in New York and studied at the City College of New York and in Paris with cubist sculptor Ossip Zadkine. He is credited with pioneering the concept of pedestal free sculpture, and is best known for his large scale, colorful metal sculptures. Sugarman is known for his large scale architectural installations at the Federal Court Building in Baltimore, First National Bank in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Xerox Building in El Segundo, California.
