Die Auferweckung des Lazarus. Kupferstich. 20,7 x 32,2 cm. 1544. Wurzbach 1, Hollstein 2 I (von II). Wz. Kleines Wappen mit Buchstaben und Vierblatt (ähnlich Briquet 9891: Brüssel 1534; Brügge 1535; Antwerpen 1541-48; Maastricht 1542). Die bemerkenswert vielseitige Künstlerpersönlichkeit Lambert Suavius - er betätigte sich als Architekt, Dichter, Maler, Zeichner und Graphiker - gehörte in Liège dem humanistischen Kreis um Lambert Lombard an, dessen Schüler und Schwager er war. Nach seiner Weiterbildung in Italien, war er zuerst in seiner Heimatstadt und seit den 1550er Jahren in Antwerpen und Frankfurt tätig. Suavius schuf eine Reihe von Blättern nach Vorlagen seines Lehrmeisters Lombard, aber die 1544 entstandene Auferweckung des Lazarus ist sein frühester datierter Stich, der gleichzeitig eine eigenständige Stilentwicklung markiert. Das Blatt muss erheblich zu Suavius Bekanntheit als Kupferstecher beigetragen haben, denn kein Geringerer als Vasari nannte den Stich in seinen Viten und erwähnte die angewandte Lichtbehandlung lobend (Vite, erste Ausgabe von 1550, Ausgabe Milanesi, V, 426). Ganz ausgezeichneter, klarer und wirkungsreicher Frühdruck vor der Verkleinerung der Platte und vor der vollständigen Überarbeitung. Bis an die Plattenkante bzw. Darstellung geschnitten. Minimal fleckig vor allem rechts oben, verso links oben kleine Knickspuren bzw. minimal wellig, weitere unbedeutende Erhaltungsmängel, sonst sehr schönes, unbehandeltes Exemplar. Verso mit Stempel des Vereins für Geschichte der Deutschen in Böhmen (Lugt 5006). Galerie Bassenge, Auktion 80, 29. THE DESCENT FROM THE CROSS measurements note 285 by 216mm inscribed on the crucifix in brown ink: INRI pen and brown ink and wash NOTE Lambert Zutman, generally known as Lambert Suavius, was one of the more accomplished painters active in Liège in the mid-16th century. Hardly any drawings can be attributed to him with any certainty, but comparison with those that are known - notably a large stained glass design in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. 14524), and a sheet of studies of three sybils, in the Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf (inv. FP4750) - and also with the composition and figure types seen in Suavius' paintings and prints, suggests that the present sheet should be considered one of his rare studies. Like many of Sauvius' paintings, this drawing is in some respects close in style to the work of Lambert Lombard, but exhibites a greater refinement and elegance, reflecting a more obvious influence of Italian art than is the case for Lambert Lombard. In terms of biographical information, all that is known is that Suavius married in 1539, that dated paintings are known from between 1544 and 1562, and that he seems to have died in Frankfurt between 1574 and 1576.
