    Arthur Studd,  British 1863-1919 -  Driveway;  oil on panel, 22 x 15.9 cm (unframed)  Provenance:  with The Fine Art Society (by repute);  private collection  Note:  the present work displays the influence of Whistler on the artist, in its gentle palette and emphasis on atmosphere. Studd was neighbours with Whistler and had travelled and painted with him in France, later donating a number of works by him from his own collection to the Tate and British Museum. He had solo exhibitions at the Groupil Gallery and the Alpine Club Gallery in London. There are a number of works by the artist in important UK collections including the Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow, York Art Gallery and the Tate.

    Arthur Haythorne Studd,  British 1863-1919-  Trees in Blossom;  oil on panel, 21 x 14.8 cm.  Provenance:  with Magdalene Street Gallery, Cambridge.;  from where purchased by Dr D.S. Brewer (according to the label attached to the reverse).  Private Collection, UK.  Exhibited:  Cambridge, Magdalene Street Gallery, 'Arthur Studd Exhibition', 10 February-4 March 1967, no.17.  Note:  Studd was a painter and art collector, as well as a celebrated cricketer. He studied at the Slade School of Art, under Alphonse Legros (1837-1911), and at the Académie Julian in Paris. He met and befriended Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), and was heavily influenced by both, travelling with Gauguin to Papeete in Tahiti in 1897-98. Studd produced a number of similar studies of trees in blossom, representing an exploration of the atmosphere of the changing seasons.
