Scotland.- Stuart (John Sobieski Stolberg) Vestiarium Scoticum, 75 glazed colour plates of clan tartans, Edinburgh, 1842.

      Est: £400 - £600

Scotland.- Stuart (John Sobieski Stolberg) Vestiarium Scoticum: from a Manuscript formerly in the Library of the Scots College at Douay, hand-coloured lithographed plate and 75 glazed colour plates of tartans mounted on thick paper, captioned tissue guards, foxing to mounts, with copy of a letter concerning a new edition of the work loosely inserted, contemporary red morocco with Royal Scottish arms in gilt to both covers, g.e., rather worn and scuffed, spine faded, some repairs, small folio, Edinburgh, 1842. ⁂ Notorious work on clan tartans, purportedly from a manuscript discovered by the Sobieski Stuart brothers who claimed to be descended from Prince Charles Edward Stuart or Bonnie Prince Charlie. Despite the misgivings of Sir Walter Scott and later being denounced as a forgery, along with the brothers themselves who appear to have invented many of the patterns, the work was welcomed by the clans and many of the tartans are still in use.
