Signed on the front rysowane nocą | 8 III 2019 | A.S.| Krzyż mojego Patrona. Andrzej Strumiłło, painter, printmaker, sculptor, photographer, author and poet born in 1927 in Vilnius, has been strongly influenced by travel. According to the critic Mieczysław Porębski, “More than anything Strumiłło has been drawn to and continues to be drawn to Asia – its vast expanses, its past, its scales, its contrasts.” The artist journeyed to Mongolia, Nepal, India, China and Vietnam, each time becoming even more deeply fascinated by the traditions, philosophies and canons of beauty of the Far East. His refined, simplified works were inspired by Chinese and Japanese aesthetics and calligraphy: “the symbolism, lapidary shortcuts, mysteries held by centuries-old layers of ink made up on stones.” The exhibition at the Manggha Museum features drawings he made during his travels, works from the series Catalogue and Lama Symbols, granite sculptures Adsum and Om, and photos from the Meditations cycle. Strumiłło was born in 1927 in Vilnius, Lithuania, he graduated from the Łódź State Art School under the direction of Władysław Strzemiński and the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the supervision of Eugeniusz Eibisch and Adam Marczyński, among others. He made his debut in 1954 at an exhibition in Beijing as part of a cultural exchange. His work was hugely influenced not only by the avant-garde experiments of Strzemiński during his studies in Łódź and the colourists of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, but also by his first trip to the Far East and the innumerable trips to follow, in Asia, Europe, and the United States (on behalf of the Polish Chamber of Commerce). For several years he also served as the director of the graphics studio at the Secretariat of the UN.
