    Original Large Watercolor Illustration by Frederick Strothmann (1879-1958) of a pilgrim. Framed under glass measures 25.50x21. PROVENANCE: The Estate of American Illustrator R. John Holmgren. Frederick Strothmann was born in Philadelphia. He studied at the Carl Hecker Art School in New York City, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Berlin Royal Academy and in Paris. For much of his life he lived in Flushing, NY. After returning from abroad, he achieved success as a noted magazine illustrator and political cartoonist. He illustrated some very popular World War I Liberty War Bond Posters including Beat Back the Hun. Strothmann also illustrated Mark Twain's 1903 edition of The Jumping Frog and the 1904 edition of Mark Twain's Extracts from Adam's Diary - both for Harper and Brothers. His work can be found in the Asheville Art Museum; The Neuberger Museum of Art - SUNY, Purchase College; Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art- Saint Francis College; The University of Michigan Museum of Art. Americans would purchase more than $23 billion worth to help the war effort.This collection is from Dr. David Orzeck by descent to his daughter Lida Orzeck and the entire collection is offered without reserve. Lida Orzeck came across more than 750 vintage war posters from World War I and World War II in her family’s home basement that her father, David Orzeck, a Brooklyn doctor, had meticulously collected. Discovered in 1970, the posters â€" of which few pristine prints remain with the exception of the National Archives and the Library of Congress â€" were in mint condition, neatly catalogued and folded in brown wrapping paper from grocery stores. Size: Framed: 32" H x 22" W x 1" D Weight: 8 pounds Provenance: Dr. David Orzeck Condition: Framed behind glass. Six taped repairs along edges. Minor wrinkling lower left corner. Has not been exposed to sunlight, thus preserving the vibrant colors. Artist Biography: Frederick Strothmann (1879-1958) was born in Philadelphia. In the Garden of Eden, a.k.a. Niagara Falls Park. For the frontispiece of the first edition, the German-born illustrator Fred Strothmann depicts the naked Adam at work on his diary. He chisels the entries on stone tablets while Eve and a host of creatures look on.
