N/A Original ink and wash drawing (9 x 5? in.; 229 x 133 mm), signed "Strothmann," being the frontispiece illustration for Clemens's Extracts from Adam's Diary, ca. 1904; matted, framed and glazed. In the Garden of Eden, a.k.a. Niagara Falls Park. For the frontispiece of the first edition, the German-born illustrator Fred Strothmann depicts the naked Adam at work on his diary. He chisels the entries on stone tablets while Eve and a host of creatures look on. The menagerie of approving onlookers includes a tiger, a lion, two monkeys, a squirrel, a turtle, a frog, and, of course, a smiling serpent. with: Clemens, Samuel L.
